If spammers were creating quality content, you are correct - they would rank well. Links suck as a proxy for grading the quality of content. It was a unique idea back when Clinton was president, but not anymore.

Hmmm... Adwords are paid links. Maybe Google is trying to stop the skewing of their SERPS, but puchasing links, link trading, ect. still works wonders with Yahoo and MSN. The only way to truly stop the SEO link business is to have users vote on the relevancy of a site, and then rank it based on the results.

So adwords does not buy links? They just sell them!!!
I have stated before that all these so called messed up algo is not the case of an algo gone bad. G would rather see the results in constant flux that way the only ones that can do well is the players that can afford a adwords campaign that will display them on the front page of the results.

I would not be supprised if the so called page rank updates are very unpredictable as time goes on and will be more incremental with less swings.

Again - remember that the Google page rank is updated constantly, just not published constantly.

ronmojonny, they can only trying:) it still do good on Google too, just need to be much more carefull then with Yahoo and MSN. As long as links will play role in their algo and BIG role, people will cheat them no matter what. It prooven by time since they appeared.

Technically they are both exactly the same if the directory is paid. Paid Links.

But google's webmaster help STILL says to submit to relevant directories such as dmoz and yahoo.

I think he sold it at the right time.

Without links people would resort to spammy onsite factors to rank. Remember the keyword stuffing age?

Google Adwords can be very expensive. I tried advertising on a specific niche and google wants $10 per hit. Isn't that a little too much? I mean the hourly minimum wage is way below that. Who monitors this?

WOW, and if somebody like me is browsing your ads, that tab will climb fast.

I click on so many of those adwords, its just crazy. Just to see what the sites are about and stuff. :)

Last time it was metatags, then keyword stuffing and now link trade. In either direction google goes, people will follow simply because Internet is a big business. People want hits and they can get it from serp. As long as money can be made form internet, people will (try) to trick google, y! or msn by increasing their sites' popularity. This spam issue will not end, just like household pest. you cant eradicate them BUT you can control/manage them.

You know this gives me some ideas.

I could write my own textlink brokering website.

But I dont want to spend months of programming and then find out later on that it was a waste of time.

Lets see how my time goes in the upcoming monhts and see what kind of project we decide to work on next.

Well, I thought about this also. But as you can see many people still using link exchange (so not even paid one-ways) networks. And if do it right and don't overdo like 1000s of links and lot of them unrelated I can't see nothing wrong with it. However always did that without that networks.

Maybe you should start this a lot earlier, well, good luck anyway.

Well, they certainly don't mean just any directory. They mean trusted directories with an actual editorial policy.
