Never ever install a brand new MS product. Wait for at least the third rollout.

Buy your PC when you can get a good deal. Almost all are offering a free upgrade to at least the basic version of vista.

I think this is the best advice, always wait for a more stable release before upgrading. :D

Good system, I have a similar configuration which I ordered to get the numeric keypad.

I do recommend the faster (RPM) hard drive.

XP Pro or Media will serve you well for years.

Vista still has some issues...as did XP when it came out. Go ahead and buy a PC. Don't plan on going Vista for a few years, as most companies are not producing software that will work with it yet.

512MB won't be enough RAM for sure if you roll with Vista. I was having issues using only 512 with XP Home!!!

Not to mention, every day you wait the hardware will get cheaper and faster for the same price. Just wait. If you REALLY need Vista (I doubt you do), then wait and buy a machine with it ALREADY installed. Upgrading is certain to take years off your life by virtue of added stress. If you do not need Vista, just grab a machine with Windows XP.

Or, for the ultimate upgrade - install Linux.

for systems, i can safely say that it doesn't matter when you buy the system. new, more powerful systems are being rolled out every month and getting cheaper, so if you wait for the next 'offer', you'd get the same great deal as you'll see today. so it all boils down to when you really need a pc. as for me, i bought my laptop 2 months before going to college. the most powerful one that was. and 2 months later, a new specs was released.

Yes, i say stick with XP first and wait for the third rollout of Vista before you do upgrade. Windows has an excellent history to make a buggy product. At least wait for Vista to gain momentum and repaired most of its errors.
