H1 Heading Tags

I have a script that is kicking out nice meta tags, keyword, description and title tags. The problem is there is no heading tags at all.

The question is this. I have always found H1 tags the upmost important just like a good title tag. Has this changed at all?

The problem is does this apply more recently for the major 3 in say the last 3-6 months or can a site rank well without a good heading tag.

Any actual experience in this matter would be appreciated.

Yes, headers are important as well for SEO. You should ensure that your content has headers tag to partition the respective topics.

Completely agree! Other than seo, heading tags are also good to be used as "content seperating tags".
have 1 heading tag at the start of the content at least.
    Bye :)

Just to add (I agree with the above): metatags aren't very important any more.

It's best to have 1 H1 tag and a few H2 tags per page, not totally neccessary for SEO but it help's.

Well at least H1. It appears that others may be important. Thanks for all the input.

Someone also metioned meta tags no longer important. I have always found a description tag a help so always included the rest such as keyword ect. I would still bet that the H1 tag and Title tag are more important than the meta tags though....

Looks like the script will need to be hacked a bit to show a H1 tag.

    Anyone?

Personally I use H1, H2, H3 and sometimes even H4. Just depends on the article in question. H1 for the most important title (usually the first, but not always). H2 for subtitle and main titles within the text. H3 for author and subtitles on a lower level then H2 etc.

If I read that right you said you would have an H2 tage on a page in some cases as opposed to a H1?

I think h1 are very important, on my sites I don’t have h1 and I am not ranked very well, I think this may be the case.

H1, H2, H3 tags are a must if you want to be serious with SEO.
But If you overdo this, this can i return harm your site.

I believe Meta Tags are still very important - Titles and Descriptions are still getting pulled by SEs. H1 etc does seem to have an impact but if you do your research you can see alot of sites rank at or near top without using them whatsoever - I have found that its about text size more than its about what tags you use - bigger text seems to get more interest from the SE - all SEs are different though and each of them has different needs that like to be satisfied. In saying all this - I personally use h1, h2 and h3 - I use bold and other tags to feature key words and I place high importance still on my meta tags. In the end, there may be only a slight difference in SEO between getting number 1 and number 20 - but number 1 sure gets a heap more traffic!

H1 / 2 etc tags aren't completely necessarily, but they do help. Especially with getting quicker Google rankings.
I've had websites with no H tags get ranked on the first page using no such tags.
However, I'd compare using such tags like using an XML sitemap...

With Sitemaps you're telling the search engines what's important on your page, and what your page is all about.
If you use Sitemaps you'll know that you have to rank each page on your site between 0.1 and 1.0.
If you rank all your pages at 0.5 then the search engines would find it more difficult to determine which pages are more important.

Like with H tags - if you don't use them then the search eninges will find it more difficult to determine what's important and what's not on each individual page.

That's my take on it anyway.

No. I use H1 always: for the title.
    H2 for subtitles
H3 for third level titles and author name
    etc.

See the code on this page (on SEO and stuff). On that page I use H1 for the title (Internet stuff ...)
    H2 for my name
H3 for each category (myspace, SEO etc.)
H4 (once) for a subcategory under myspace ( Myspace Rumors debunked).

It's about setting up your information logically and then giving appropriate headings.
