How did Megaupload get that big in just a short time? Leading website of the world

Well I'm pretty amazed to see how Megaupload get that big in just 1.5 years of time. It's currently the world leading website for file hosting.

They've started immidiately at the beginning with 200.000 pageviews/day according to the Alexa stats (see the stats image). And a few months later the stats show that it keeps rising and rising. I'm pretty amazed, because i never have seen any advertising of them.

How did they do this? I really would like to give my thinking about it, but I cannot imagine a way how they could realize this. Anybody want to share their thoughts?

The extremely hard grow of Badongo is clear to me (see the stats image), since they are advertising a lot in Google. Also they do press releases from time to time, so i'm not surprised, but while googling about Megaupload I cannot find any press release they've done.

yea thats interesting, I would love to know their marketing strategies as well :)

I'm sure they must of emailed a lot of people and from there on, it must of just gone viral.

Although their website isn't really offering any better than other file host sites offer lol :p

Where did you hear that MU is the leading file hosting website? Isn't Rapidshare the biggest?

Either way, megaupload has a dominating presence in the file uploading market.

I will be interested to see some of the input on this.

From what I remember of MegaUpload, their limits are lower than
the competitors - ie, you can download more, for free. Of course,
my slightly suspicious memory might have remembered it wrong.

I guess it is rather viral in that people upload things and then link to the download section so that others can download what they have uploaded. Doing this will build backlinks and get more people to the site.

I know lots of people that use it to upload their Music that they have made from DJing and things for others to download.

thanks to all.. seems that nobody know it exactly what they did. Well that is not surprisingly because I also don't know how they did it.

I think viral marketing is indeed the thing.

pretty much took over the bittorent market since its safer, more anonymous and gives you gauranteed upload speeds

megaupload owes its success to the ever changing pirating demographic

It's quite simple really, they have lots of illegal files and porn that people go via them to download. I assume a good system that allows them to provide fast downloads for free but still make them money would have helped.

So the motto is 'If it is free, people will use it'

The reason why they the megaupload.com has attracted huge traffic in two years

    They simply allow illegal downloads

I can download my tamil films from them directly I can even give you a link for it

and some persons have uploaded the films in the parts and I think most of the traffic may br from India as we are downloading it day by day

To download the films we should use a toolbar called megaupload toolbar

I believe it is because of the warez sites out there. A LOT of people use these sites and lets face, everybody around the globe loveeee free softwares. I prefer Rapidshare though. Megaupload is crap!

What has me amazed here is that it ranks MU higher than Rapid... that's just amazing considering what a shitty service they provide.

No matter what they have done, I wouldn't like to be the person who has to pay the web hosting bills. There are files on there that are much larger than 150mb's in size.

What's interesting is why the two graphs are so closely matched.
Is that just a glitch in Alexa, or is it because every time a new file
is released it goes on both sites?

rapidshare deffiantly is a big player in the upladoing markeitng and probly the biggest, my guess is rapid share also make the most money due to their accounts.

But megaupload has deffiantly come up from no where basically due to the fact that you can download heaps off it and not have many limits, mega upload is probly the market leader in small downloading files.

Their sucess is due to VIRAL marketing...they dont need to advertise becuase people spma their links all over the place...
