I was not trying to comment on you in any way. I have seen you post very useful information. It is just this notion of "a public domain" and "public domain". The word "domain" in the phrase "public domain" is an old term, long pre-dating the Internet and simply has nothing do do with domains, or domain names. do·main (dÅ-mÄn') pronunciation n. 1. A territory over which rule or control is exercised. 2. A sphere of activity, concern, or function; a field: the domain of history. See synonyms at field. 3. Physics. Any of numerous contiguous regions in a ferromagnetic material in which the direction of spontaneous magnetization is uniform and different from that in neighboring regions. 4. Law. 1. The land of one with paramount title and absolute ownership. 2. Public domain. 5. Mathematics. 1. The set of all possible values of an independent variable of a function. 2. An open connected set that contains at least one point. 6. Biology. Any of three primary divisions of living systems, consisting of the eukaryotes, bacteria, and archaea, that rank above a kingdom in taxonomic systems that are based on similarities of DNA sequences. 7. Computer Science. A group of networked computers that share a common communications address. When used in reference to copyright, the term is used, as it is on this page: http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm So, everything created before 1923, according to US law is in the public domain. So any book written prior to then may be freely copied, etc. There is no copyright attached to those works anymore. There are many others that are also in the public domain, but that is the clearest defining line.
yea i know what copyright laws are but check out these sites: http://www.efrendz.com/channels/pictures/aa/ http://www.celebritywonder.com/html/gallery.shtml http://www.celebritywonder.com/cgi-...ttp://adamlevine.info/visuals/index.php?cat=2 (this one even still has the watermark for a site that says: DONT REPUBLISH http://www.djmick.co.uk/gallery8/rachel_bilson_pictures.htm how come they get to put pictures up? not trying to sound rude or anything, just curiouse
It is a question of risk versus reward. You must decide for yourself how risk averse you are. I make no suggestion and have no opinion as to what one should use on their own websites. I, and others, merely want to make sure people base that important decision on fact and not a misinterpretation of the law. Obviously, many sites use images without permission. That does not make it legal, nor does it mean they will ever have any problems.
If you use an image and link back to the site then thats normally OK. If they don't like it they will tell you and you can take it down.
Well that's not really ok. Even if you post a link back to the source and include a credit line it's still infringement. You need to obtain permission before doing so. Some sites will ask you to remove it, others will just file DMCA complaints to your host and search engines.
