Alexa Ranking: Tips

Here's a concern from an internet marketer:

"I have seen PR1 websites having an alexa ranking. I have a PR2 website and still has no alexa ranking.
Can anybody provide some tip or solution?"

As I understand it, Alexa ranking is based only on traffic, not PR (PageRank). PR is Google's way of determining a websites popularity. Google PageRank (PR) is based on the value of incoming links to your site. Alexa rankings are based on the number of times people who use the Alexa Toolbar visit a site. Alexa rankings are to websites what Nielsen ratings are to television.

Read the limitations of the ratings on the Alexa website. Short version: The ranking of web sites over 100,000 are increasingly less reliable. For example, there may not be much difference from a site ranked 750,000 and one ranked 900,000.

Here are two tips for increasing your Alexa ranking:

1. Continue to build a high-quality site with content people want and do all the other things you probably know about to attract more traffic to your site.

2. Install the Alexa Toolbar on Internet Explorer (it doesn't work with Firefox) and everytime you visit your site, make sure you use IE with the Alexa Toolbar on. I know it sounds crazy but do it as an experiment for 3 months and see if it makes a difference in your Alexa ranking. I bet it will.
Encourage your regular website visitors to use the Alexa Toolbar too.
Alexa ranking is based ONLY on the amount of times your site is visited by someone with the Alexa toolbar installed.

 

Thanks for the tips, but everyone should know by now that Alexa is next to worthless. You would be much better off spamming social bookmarking websites.

 

thanks for the tips...i don't know about your second tip, really there's something to learn everyday...thanks again but unfortunately i agree with Conway that Alexa is next to worthless ad many are spamming to get high traffic...sad but true...

 

I'll "third" the notion.

Alexa is a useless measure.

 

surely alexa has not much importance; its always more for a webmaster related website even having less visitors than another non webmasters related site as most of webmasters use Alexa toolbar; So just keep in mind the reality that not every one is using Alexa Toolbar even my Zone Alarm considers it as 'spyware'

 

Alexa is not useless. So you're saying Yahoo isn't really number one most visited site on the web?

 

And you visiting your own site with the alexa toolbar helps you how?

 

Boosts alexa ranking ... Well sites in the top 100k have some respect and some ad programs consider your alexa rank too

 

Just install alexa tool bar and visit you site many times and your alexa ranking will shot up.
Alexa is not reliable but its not an accurate measure of visitors to your site. For example alexa does not record AOL visitors and any visitor without alexa plugin

 

Alexas are good for noticing trends (especially if you watch certain industries), but not for an exact measure of which sites are the busiest since it can be faked.

I really wish that alexa would crash and nevr come back up, there are so many people out there that take note in alexa.

little tip here:

I had two sites one was related to webmasters (that have Alexa tool bar installed) then the other was an old granny site, they was both getting around the same amount of traffic and the webmaster related one got a better alexa ranking.

when I say better it was just over 100,000 and the granny site was still at 2 mill.

Trust alexa Not as them that do could fall

 

alexa is accurate... but only for the higher ranking sites.

just try doing what you suggest to see if you can break into the top 1000
