Mike has tried to be very straightforward

No one needs another DMOZ (which you are planning to make) Does that sound right now?

some of them do not want another big directory as they feel that their

directories could lose out if some how by chance it becomes the largest

Also I am going to do away with instant inclusions

instead I would be displaying the google ads of editors on all pages

I think that would be good idea

As they can earn a lot by this

Editor can also be a refferrer If some one comes to the directory using the

referral link their google ads will be displayed

and If some one is a editor his ads will displayed on the submission page

I would love that you post here your funny posts instead of your new forum. could you do more jokes concerning html/mysql
could you also talk about your strategy to convince google to endorse your directory.
    thank you, thank you :D

I will tell here in it in detail

The directory would have more than 500,000 categories

and it would run on a database with different tables or with different databases

but only submission pages will be php generated and all the other pages would be in static html

    Here is the example

in aphplink directory with search engine friendly pages you get URL like this

    http://www.jeffbrowninc.com/Arts

Do not give me a infraction for this as ?I could not post in the same post I am posting here

if you go to this you would have arts category page in it

Save it as index.html and then create a Arts folder and upload index.html into that arts folder

and then delete the .htaccess file

Then go to your index page and click on Arts you will have the have the page that you saved and uploaded it

by this way it does not runs on a php so load on the server can be minimum and when you click submit link page

you would have it from database

This the technique I am going to follow

    What hinders me is that

whether to put google ads on the pages

If a visitor is referred by a editor his Google adsense ads would be displayed in all the pages the visitor browses

That is what I am trying to do

Also another happy news it that I have finished 1000 categories and since these days are University holidays for me I hope I would be able to complete the directory within December 31st

Just few weeks ago, I had the same question. Not really thought I would create a big directory like Dmoz actually...

At least you can give it a try. You never know what would happen until you try, even though some predictions against the project could be easily made, I think trying and experimenting is the first step for any business. Good luck.

Yes you are right trying and experimenting is a good way to find out

but I am also thinking of another project

That if a user types architecture in the search box

    Architecture page will come up

But it cannot be said as a directory

Click on "Worlds Largest Directory" In his signature.. He will probably use tags since I see no categories.

It's however not the worlds largest directory and it will never be.

I think you cannot understand the concept behind it

The directory has bigoole.com depends upon on keywords

and so only it has no categories

that is when you search for keywords like "web directory"

you will be shown a list of directories and not like Google............. or like corrupt Dmoz

I have forget to tell you here as I have launched it on January 7

    also

I have done away with manual browsing of categories as if user wantsn to search for a particular keyword he can directly do it by typing in the Search Box

only the listings for the correct keyword would be shown

and I will also PM all the guys you have shown interest in my project

I think to make it the best... It would have to be multiple people's Job: like actual jobs - paid by Google (actual google employees would be editing this) and could get fired if inappropriate links got through. Yes, it could get out of hand... especially if it's all free because when it's free - everyone wants a piece of the pie that they don't get ;)

I wish to repeat., Yours will in noway be compared to Dmoz., If you want to compare your site with big directories, You can compare it with BOW or goguides, Because yours is Profit / revenue oriented and not a noble motive like dmoz

who said Dmoz was because on noble motive?First it was started out on a noble motive but as the years passed it turned into a corrupt one

    and also

These are the ways I am going to generate profit:

1)By selling two or three featured links for a month

2)and also displaying Google ads Just like that of Dmoz but I think you would have generally a higher CTR as

Thats what I am thinkinh now

And Sarathy tell me from where you are in Tamil nadu?May be from chennai so ....

Directories are old news, sortof like toplists, or guestbooks. If you want to be the next DMOZ, then you need to come up with something different and ultimately better. For example, it could be a web 2.0 kind of tag thing like One Million Lonely Bloggers is. It could be like the million dollar homepage or those expensive link pages. There are loads and loads of those kinds of ideas that if you maybe combine a handfull of them together into something more comprehensive. Like maybe wikipedia-style content + business directory listings + web 2.0 style would be a good way to go. It'd be like the encyclopedia mixed with the phone book and correlated together in a workable manner. That'd be something useful that could easily overtake the wikipedia AND the DMOZ.

    Hi,

I would be willing to provide a decent domain for a project like this for a negotiable share in the directory.
