I'd strongly suggest reading up on .edu's. Unless you are a 4 year degree granting university, you cannot own/buy or register a .edu. Just an FYI... Unless something has changed as to the ICANN guidelines that is.

Jeremy - both of your assertions are incorrect.

    1. EDU is NOT regulated by ICANN, but by the US Department of Commerce.
    2. You do NOT need to be a degree granting university to own EDU.

I've published on this topic extensivelly in the past, and as a refresher, will summarize main regulations below:

    1. Prior to 2001, EDU domains were managed by NetworkSolutions, which had somewhat different rules than the current registrar. As a result, when the US Department of Commerce transferred the administration to Educause, they stipulated a grandfathered clause. The grandfathered clause states that any EDU registered prior to 2001 does not need to meet accreditation requirements and other post-2001 stipulations (such as the 1 name per school restriction).

There are many non-university organizations that own EDU, including high schools, museums, associations, and for-profit corporations (e.g. Montgomery Blair High School - www.mbhs.edu; J. Paul Getty Trust - www.getty.edu; Exploratorium Science Museum - www.exploratorium.edu, just to name a few).

    2. Transfer of EDUs. EDU domains may not be bought or sold directly, only through the transfer of corporate ownership. Practically, this means that to get EDU, you have to buy an entire school / organization.

As an example, if you purchase Stanford University, which you can as it's a non-for profit corporation, you will, by default, become an owner of stanford(.)edu.

That is why I said, "unless something has changed"

"Institutions that do not already hold a name in the .edu domain are eligible to receive one if they are post-secondary institutions that are institutionally accredited, i.e., the entire institution and not just particular programs, by agencies on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies"

    http://www.educause.edu/edudomain/

AFAIK, Names in the .edu top-level domain, regardless of when issued, may not be transferred in any way by the Registrant to any other entity.

I'm still standing my my original assertion here. I am not trying to be a dick, I just don't want anyone to get screwed.

I would suggest taking a look here and telling me again if I am off base. If I am, again, I would really like to know for sure.

My bad, I really misread the original post to mean 1995.edu, not a edu domain from 1995. That does change things. My apologies!

Jeremy - not a problem at all. Actually, this thread is for the sale and development of a school with .edu domain, not a domain itself, which as you had correctly pointed out and I had explained before cannot be bought/sold directly (i.e. in other words, you can transfer EDUs, but only as a sale/purchase of a school).

This, of course, limits the pool of potential buyers to just those residing in the US.
