    Off page SEO = Link building. But they need to be relevant links, with good anchor-text and on pages within or close to your niche.

    Backlinks are like supporting piller, if you add your link continueously with other effective sites then the base become very powerful and site viewed more in result pages.

    Backlinks/IBLs is important in recognizing that your site is important and that in a certain keyword related to your site it will be recognized by the Big "G" and will have a proper ranking..
