I wanted to change my host and i have the domain in godaddy and its saying it will take 48hrs, i just cant get afford to wait for that much downtime, is there anyway to gurry te process up??
Can't you keep the site up at the old host until the DNS kicks in? 48 hours is rare anyways. I've seen it happen in a matter of 6-7 hours sometimes.
Keep both sites up - there is no specific time period because some will propagate sooner, but the new host should start getting some traffic within an hour - but do allow 48 hours for all.
The reason many registrars indicate a nameserver change might take up to 48 hours is because they don't want people blaming them later on if it still doesn't happen. The reality is domain propagation doesn't always happen the way we want them to, especially when no single party controls all the factors involved. The fastest I've seen happen is 20 seconds, the longest almost 72 hours. They are adopting a worst-case scenario, and there's nothing wrong with that. If the site is all set with the other host, then just change the nameservers right away. The sooner you make it happen, the sooner others can do their parts.
^^ im shifting from computinghost to dreamhost and my registrar is godaddy, so how exactly again do i do this that my site never goes down? Do i change the nameservers of my domain from computinghost to dreamhost and when it does change it will automatically stop hosting on computinghost? Can some one tellme a step by step please?
Use this http://www.opendns.com/ It is useful if you are not on dialup and have a broadband connection. The DNS updates fastest in this one and due to that you can see your domain name propogated in just a matter of an hour or so.
You have a copy of your site with each host. When you change your nameservers to dreamhost, it will start the process of updating so traffic will be sent to dreamhost. That is all you do. After 48hours or so, all traffic should be going to dreamhost. The copy of your site will still be on the computinghost server - it just won't have traffic going to it. You then email computinghost and tell them to close your account and they should delete the data.
so now i change my nameservers to dreamhosts nameservers and start adding the files also? im new to shifting . a little more details guys..thanks
You should copy all the files on the old host to the new host BEFORE you change the nameservers. Dreamhost should have given you an ip address to log into your account - if not, contact them. All the nameservers do is tell the browser what host/server to look for your files. If you change the nameservers before you put the files on the host, it obviously won't show your visitors any content until it has been copied to that server. If you are still confused, ask dreamhost to copy your files from the old host to their servers - which will require you to give them your passwords.
oh thanks a lot man i think im getting it plus when i add a domain it has two options 4.4.2 or 5.1.2 , which do you think is better?
Are talking about the version of mysql or php? I would check cpanel of your current/old host to see what they are running.
Just today I changed the nameservers for one of my domains at godaddy.com to be parked on namedrive.com and though the messages said to wait for 48hrs the change actually took place within minutes. Say 5 minutes at the maximum.
Heres what you need to do: 1. Download all files from your current host 2. Add the domain to your dreamhost account ( for which PHP version to use, consult the cpanel PHP version at your old host ). Then upload all the files. 3. Go to the server location address for the godaddy hosting (this won't be yourdomain.com but it might be something like hxxp://server3.dreamhosters.com/youraccount/yourdomain/) and check the site works. If it doesn't you may have chosen the wrong PHP version. Get it sorted out. 4. When it's working well, go to your domain registrar and change the nameservers to the dreamhost hosting. Leave your old hosting up. 5. After about 72 hours, it's safe to assume that the change has gone through, and you can email your old host to tell them to close your account. 6. You can now access your site at yourdomain.com You (or your users) shouldn't experience any downtime if you do it properly.
thats one amazing tutorial!!thanks buddy btw the hosting ur talking about is the dreamhosters hosting right? how exactly do i find my sites path?
It should make it clear when you are in the dreamhost panel, if not you could email dreamhost support, but it's normally fairly clear.
