i went to public and private schools. I think it totally depends on what style of learning you respond best to.

There are enough of your #1's around that a kid who wants to get an education can do quite well. The teachers really like students who want to learn. I had three graduate from public schools, all got college scholarships, and did well on the SAT exams.

I don't believe anyone has mentioned that at least some private schools have a LOT of wealthy kids with serious drug/alcohol/behavioral probems; not that public schools don't have these problems too.

I think 2 kids in my entire school ended up doing coke. About 1/3 will/have smoked pot though. But that's no big deal imo.

There are a lot of spoiled kids though, this one kid got a new mercedes/bentley every birthday since he turned 16.

And don't forget the families that work themselves to the bone to send one or more kids. They're not all super-wealthy.

State schools here in England are good. Of course Private schools get better results, but still, the average performance of our state schools, I think, is one of the best in the world.

I have a friend who has taught in both the UK and NZ and finds that while the UK schools taught more information the NZ schools teach more creativity and problem solving - in other words they can use the information better.

Depends on the wealth of the neighboorhood. Poor neighboorhoods aren't usually funded as well, and gangs are a bit more prevalent. When I was young I lived in a middle class neighborhood, which was infused with rather poor individuals. Fights happened almost everyday. Nothing big...like murders.

But since the gang activity was sort of influential, a lot of people I knew took the wrong route. I'm not sure how to compare it with private schools, but I would think life would be a little more tame, and the classes would be a bit smaller. Any child I have will either get home schooled or go to private schooling.

I think depending on the public school,...it can either really help or hinder a kids development.

I've known tons of drug addicts in my life...sadly. None of them went to private schools. Although I'm not familiar with those individuals, so I can't really comment.

I'd like to say from my experience it's more engrained within public schools...but I'd be interested in knowing what's really going on.

Most kids in private school are more focused on getting in to Ivy leagues...

I think about 1/3 of my graduating school went to the ivy's, 2/3 of the total graduating class went to the states...only a few stayed in canada.

We live in an area [Wake County, NC] where the public schools are top notch. Both of our children attend public school and are doing quite well. Their teachers are caring and we are involved through volunteer activities.

The upper grades may be a bit challenging but there are magnet schools on the middle and senior high school level worth exploring too. Parents here are very demanding which I think is important toward the success of any school.

Not everyone can afford private school, but I must say that public school here is very good.

Incidentally, I am the product of a public school education including my years in college.

Way better! I attended a private high school in Connecticut (USA) taught mostly by Ukranian priests. They were exceptional teachers. We took four years each of English, math, science, Latin, religion, social studies, and more. 100% of my senior class qualified for college.

By contrast, three of my four children attended public high school. The course content was deplorably unchallenging. The one daughter that we sent to private high school received a far better education.

P.S. We homeschooled all four children through second grade. That gave them a great foundation for their later studies.

Very true. Private schools are not occupied 100% by over achievers either. I have seen kids moved to a private school who did so as a last gasp effort on behalf of their parent{s} to reform the kid. True, private schools don't have to take everyone as do public schools, but $$$ can talk.

I went to a private school from elementary, high school and college.

Private schools in the Philippines have better curriculum, facilities, opportunities, etc. :)

There is also another side to social connections, you only learn to connect with a certain demographic, either rich or clever. In a public school you network with people from all backgrounds, which sets you up much better for life, because it is much more like life :)

Private schools are better in terms of concentric studies...but in my point of view...its the public schools that help us shape as a complete mentally matured person.

For me when i have kids my first priority is home schooling. Public schools are too corruptive to a young mind and who better to teach your kids than the person who loves them most in the world and helped bring them into this world. Sorry but my experiences in public schools were very negative. Either home schooling or private school if i will be able to afford it at that point.

Rez its not the education im worried about, its the other students:D
