Having your whois infomation kept private normaly costs extra, so i always just enter bogus details for my whois infomation.

is this a problem at all?

Well generally not but registrars require a valid address in your original profile (viewable by the registrar)

If you get that wrong then you are in trouble

plus go to namecheap.com they give free whois protection

People can report you, and you can then lose your domain.

They see it as illegal. I think it's total rubbish that they will care. If they wanted it all to be correct they should have a check system (Like google local), not just a 'Add and not validation'.

I'm sure that WHOIS should be making more of an effort to check the addresses or at least having a 'unconfirmed /confirmed address patch that would be cool.

as far as I know,if you give wrong address information and you are reported you'll lose the domain...so I agree you need to change it fast.

On most registrars it's only like an extra $6 or so to make your info private. IMO having the correct contact info is vital as your domain is the most valuable asset to your website and I wouldnt want to take any chances. Also, making it private significantly cuts back on spam.

Is it fraud if you provide fake info? Someone should answer this :)
I've also been wondering if I can use an "assumed name" if it's not actually registered, incorporated or whatever.

its not fraud, there's no law in any country that says you have to supply the organisation "whois" with your data.

    ummm... then again.

    from wiki

The Fraudulent Online Identity Sanctions Act "make it a violation of trademark and copyright law if a person knowingly provided, or caused to be provided, materially false contact information in making, maintaining, or renewing the registration of a domain name used in connection with the violation."

but i don't live in the US so again i ask.. whocares?

i don't like having my home address and phone number being displayed in public, so use whois protection or "fake" whois info. Not really fake, but a bit confusing, while its still ok.

I suppose it wouldn't matter to a foreign small-time domainer, but don't expect any serious bidders to approach you.

Yeah that's right.... Still Whois protection has a purpose to be there. Providing fake address is illegal in some way or the other.
