Are you joking? There are pirated copies circling around for weeks, not only that, they validate as genuine against a pirated authentication server out there on the net.... LOL You feel safe and secure with Vista??? ...
So does Vista actually have groups and permissions as implemented in Unix/Linux? The last time I used a Windoze desktop, after logging in to the local machine, I had access every single users data stored on the desktop. can you really use commands (or equivalents of) chmod and chown to set permissions, even if it's through the *fireworks explode in the background* pretty graphics?
each user account can be set to user groups, so you can limit the access to other users files and other group files.
I got my Vista Ultimate RTM since it came out to MSDN subscribers. It's an excellent piece of software and runs very quickly. I'm running Vista on a laptop (specs below). Acer Travelmate 8200: Windows Vista Ultimate. Intel Core Duo T2500. 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 667 SDRAM. 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) TFT LCD. ATI Radeon X1600 512MB. 120GB Hard Drive.
I have heard that it is more stylish and can be compared to the mac in that sense, and improved security. well we'll just have to see about that, within a few days another major bug will show up.
I was kind of optimistic about it after reading mostly good things in a PC magazine... but just today I stumbled across kind of a bad review from a person I know. It hit much harder
Yet for me, my wireless keyboard and mouse works, my radeon chipset works and I think that guy is full of crap
sorry guys, but what is RTM? shall i go for windows vista too? currently, i'm using it for my development work i.e. php, .net, mysql etc. do u think it worths to buy it and install everythings once again?
I don't think that guy knows what he's talking about (no offense or anything). A "fairly up to date" computer will not get a performance rating of 1 unless there are no available WDMM drivers for your graphics card, which is very rare. And his claim that 90% of computers will get that rating is absurd. Vista is rather scalable and can be run on most computers (even on computers that are a few years old). Microsoft has released Vista final drivers for their mouses and keyboards (IntelliPoint and IntelliType). I have a wireless keyboard/mouse from Microsoft that works perfectly. Check Microsoft's website. Not all software has been ported to Vista yet. It's not even technically released. All of my programs run perfectly fine for me. [edit] RTM means Released to Manufacturing. Unless you're a business customer or have a MSDN subscription or participated in the Vista beta program, you cannot get Vista legally right now.
Toby, when you decided to get vista, you do not need to reinstall everything. Vista keeps your files, folders and programs installed, and only upgrades from XP.
Is this the correct forum for Windows Vista? I thought it'd be more appropriate under General Chat. Anyway, just thought I'd share that I've gotten lots of technical help about the new OS over at http://thevistaforums.com
I beta tested the Vista then called LongHorn back in 2004. Since then it has come a long way. Im still a little skeptical and will wait till WinFS is released till I upgrade. However while Im here I wanted to highlight the nature of this war: Windows users are too afraid to try out anything else. Mac users hate Microsoft. Linux users hate Mac + Microsoft. Unix/BSD users hate Linux + Mac + Microsoft. When will this end?
You have no idea how untrue that is!!! Do you know whats running under MacOS hood??? Your truly BSD. Better know what your talking about before spitting it out....
I know that, being a freeBSD user myself. But *BSD users hate linux more and more users ditch Mac in favour of linux so it made sense to write it that way.
