Hi all, Since I started blogging I have been writing 100% unique content. My question is: is it a good idea to quote articles from other sites/blogs and use that for content occasionally? I'm wondering from the standpoint of seo - how will the se's treat your site if it has the exact same content on it as someone else etc? thoughts are appreciated.
If you're quoting a small part of an article that would be fine, but if you were copying entire articles then that would be bad for SEO due to duplicate content and also potentially infringe somebody elses copyright.
hmm I see... I have come across a lot of blogs that quote entire articles then just put a link to the original. So you think it will HURT my site from an seo standpoint? You don't think I would get ANY searches for that text?
From an SEO point of view it wouldn't do much if any good as it is duplicate content, you may get a bit of extra SE traffic rather it would actually hurt your rankings I don't know. Ethically though it's just wrong, as you would effectively be stealing content, you're right that it is done a lot but that doesn't make it ok.
hmm ok well I'd like to hear from other people what they think about whether or not it will hurt the seo in general. As far as it being stealing... I see tons and tons of blogs - big huge mainstream blogs that quote other published info on a daily basis... I thought I read somewhere that this was ok...
Quoting must always come with an out link to the original source. Every successful blogger does it regularly.. you might get a link in return and additional traffic (future potential links). It does help SEO rankings in the long run .. just make sure you come out with some quality content alongside the quoted stuff..
Quoting other content is fine, in fact it can even make your articles better if done correctly. Just be sure the majority of what you post is actually yours.
Check your affiliate programs, some of them have RSS feeds built especially for blogs and to be easily rewritable. As for being punished for duplicate content, there's no proof that theres any 'penalty' at all for it. If there was a penalty, could you not duplicate your competitions content a hundred times and have them penalized? Plus, check news.google.com which is 100% RSS feeds. Another good example is ps3vault.com ... all run from about 3 or 4 RSS feeds using Autoblogger (see sig), it's PR5, and first page results for keywords like 'ps3' among others (see for yourself). But don't get me wrong, the people will like fully unique content if it's good... But, if you're #1 on google for a particular article anyways, who cares who wrote it? I'll answer that too... who cares? Maybe the people you're getting the RSS feeds from.. Check the TOS of the rss feeds, most big sites have them. Sometimes you can publish it, sometimes you're allowed if theres no ads in the article, and make sure to link back to the original article. (Thus being the reason said sites have rss feeds, for traffic) /rant
autoblogging cant be a good idea. aside from creating pages to fatten up a website, and trying to pull traffic to click on your ads, it doesnt provide a whole lot of benefits. best to go with original content if you can.
Your best bet to avoid duplicate content is to link to the original but not to quote it. Maybe just quote some key points that you want to respond to.
