I think I am a little bitter! 5 years building sites playing by the rules only to see a spammer come up with stolen content taking the top 6 of 10 results in the serps will do this! Yeah I think PiS_D would be a better way to define how I feel. I built my sites, invested and did the long hours like so many others. It's time to evolve or perish and if spam is the way to stay alive then I guess I have to go to the dark side...

Generally speaking, because Google's current search team is incompetent and their "improvements" consistently result in worse search results.

The search results are so bad I'm starting to look at the AdWords ads to find what I'm looking for...

Guess you are on to something there :) Maybe that's just what they want us to. Don't mind the SERP's, our Ads are much better!! All our web sites are just "fill" for them. Serve some shitty sites first and then people will click on the ads instead. If someone is foolish enough to click on a link in the SERP's then we will have our Ads on a MFA site anyway, so it's a win-win situation for us......

tons of people got thrown into supplemental at the same time so there will probably be a a 'fix' for this latest one..

we definitely need big income sources from different sites (like will spencer mentions), not just one big site (which is my case), I've been working on diversifying into other sites since this Google chaos all started this summer, but it will take a few years to get other sites into that much income.

Fortunately I have some other income also and some savings so although its upsetting to lose a nice income that took years to build, I'm covered and I can keep working to get further ahead. :)

I'll be really happy the day a new search engine comes in and balances internet search, or 2 or 3, it seems really unnatural with the nature of the web for almost everyone to use one search engine.

This depends on how you define the word "improvement"

Not all of our sites are in the can right now but I am pretty sure we are not alone. I've seen well optimised aged sites tumble without any logical reason. The point you make may well be valid. We did a total rebuild of our real estate site and as things stand it is working perfectly in Google. It's very easy to build a site exactly for the serps but in the case of our older sites - well they just happen to work for the users as they have done for years. Maybe we have to change now but the development and expense would be considerable so that is something we need to weigh up. The thing is we just don't know what the problem is given our sites have worked for years and that they are in and out of the rankings on a regular basis. Who has the problem us or the "improved" algorithm?

exactly, the first time it happened to me i paniced and couldnt sleep, now i just ride it out and they show back up after indexing, could be 4 days or more.

Anyone know why this happens to some sites? My theory is if a lot of links change it can make this happen to your site. I'll notice all my competitors sites are still there, only mine temporarily disappear.

    Another example:

There is one three word search term for which I have been ranked well (3-7) since July. I have a pretty decent page on that term, though nothing truly remarkable.

Suddenly a few days ago, my page is missing from the SERPS. I haven't changed anything. All of my competitors didn't suddenly put up better pages or build more backlinks. It's just that the idiots at Google "lost" my page from their crappy database.

Then, today, they "found" it again and I'm #3.

This isn't through any fault of my own, or through any brilliance of my own. Nor is it an action of my competitors. Nor is it Google changing their algorithms. This is just another software glitch.

OK though, let's be honest, everyone has bugs in their software. What do you do then? You take bug reports and you track them down and you fix them. That's what every professional software organization on Earth does.

Well, everyone except Google. Google has no effective bug reporting methodology. To report bugs, you must be one of Matt Cutt's sycophants.

Worse, Google's corporate culture is so paralyzed by arrogance that they consistently refuse to admit bugs -- even in the face of overwhelming evidence. The truth is that Google's search team is simply too academic and too inexperienced to understand the standard software development lifecycle.

It's a bunch of kids with degrees trying to pretend that they know what they are doing, when it is clear to any objective observer that they clearly don't.

I wonder about Google's click through data from organic to paid results after one of these so called "refreshes" - I wonder if they see a big spike when site owners panic and spend up on adwords while users scratch their heads and start looking to the right of the page instead of the left. With the focus on adwords "optimization" as heavy as it is these days you can be certain of this much - Users are slowly being conditioned to "look to the right"

    .

Last I knew, Google is still denying that anything changed. Until they admit that something changed, they can't go looking to find it. Until they go looking to find what changed, they can't fix it.

Or, in more common terms "Admitting that you have a problem is the first step to recovery."

The inescapable conclusion from watching the current search team at Google is that they have very little idea how their magic SERPS machine actually works. Whatever results it spits out they worship as if they came from the mouth of God himself.

My site is no where to be seen. It was rank on first page for many keywords and now it is not to be seen anywhere near the top of the results or on the first 50 pages or so.

Plus alot of my pages went into the supplemental results.

I have not seen any change in the amount of listings of my site in the supplemental results.

I have over 250,000 pages and about 230,000 of them are in supplemental. They were not and then all of a sudden they all went in and I lost most of my Google traffic.

I hope they really do come out very soon.

Same thing here. I have no idea why whole Blosker (all and every page) is now supplemental.

If the set back in earning causes you stress at the dollar amounts noted, then you definitely need some money management counseling.

    Two issues for you:

At 250K more than likely you have mostly duplicate pages due to the use of a template or CMS

In addition at that size you probably have a sitewide header file and without individual meta information those pages are likely to sit in supplemental.

Why would google want millions of pages of the same basic info in the main results?

Took a look at adsense today and noticed that my page had more impressions and more clicks, a quick search on google sees i'm now ranking 4 - 6 for my main keyword, so looks like it has recovered some what
