GM, Ford to lose chunk of US market share: analyst say

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. will lose significant U.S. market share in the coming years, the publisher of automotive research firm IntelliChoice said on Thursday.
"I see General Motors at 18 percent, and Ford at 13 percent in about ten years from now," James Bell told Reuters in an interview at the International Auto Show in New York. "We are headed into a brutally competitive marketplace now."
GM's market share is 24 percent while Ford's is just under 19 percent, as of the end of March.
"They still have several points to lose, and it will be a painful process," he said. "But you look at it as correcting their market share, not lowering it. They have had overproduction for way too long."
He said GM and Ford would sell fewer cars in the United States even as the market expands and Japanese manufacturers' share increases.
Bell also said the U.S. market, home to the "Big Three" -- General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCXGn.DE: Chrysler -- will see more major players in the coming years.
"For decades, it's been the Big Three. But in the next few years, it will be more like the Big Eight or Big Nine," he said.
Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp. Honda Motor Co. Ltd.Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and Korean companies such as Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. will become major players in the U.S. market, Bell said.
Toyota now has nearly 14 percent, Honda 8.5 percent and Nissan 6.7 percent.
"The Koreans will move slightly higher in the market and the Chinese will come in and find their place in the sub-Korean market," Bell said.
He expects the first Chinese car, from automaker Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. to hit U.S. markets in 2008.

I drive a Proton Satria which is a Malaysian car with a Mitsubihi Lancer engine and drivetrain.

Chinese cars would most probably require a decent engine and drivetrain to be of any worth.

Of course I would. All cars are checked for safety before they're allowed to be sold, so they're definately safe. And if it's cheaper, why not?

although there may be some nationalists, most car buyers are normal market-oriented people. if quality and price is there, most people would buy it - whether it's american, european or asian... ;)

Nope - there is only one brand I'm going to drive. And it's the only automobile in the world, and all the resa are cars. That will be Mercedes-Benz and I will never get too much of it.

A few years no one would be caught driving a Korean car, now look at their market share!!! It is already predicted that 90% of all cars will be fabricated in China in the near future so you’ll be driving a Chinese car whatever you do.

And that’s the reason why people don’t by American cars anymore. Most cars in Europe are 1.2, 1.4 or 1.6 and they still out perform American cars. Like the saying goes, size doesn’t matter it’s what you do with it that counts. ;)

My truck has about 420HP and 500 ft/lbs of torque .... There are very few street cars that can hang with me other than vipers and modified vettes. I just couldnt drive something with a 1.2L engine making like 80hp ... granted the fuel mileage would prolly be a little better than my 8MPG but it wouldnt be near as much fun!

Any normal 1.2 in Europe has around 75 hp and can reach 150 KPM which I think is dam good considering the size of the engine. I don’t know about your truck but I doubt a BMW or Audi wouldn’t give it a good run for its money :D

    heck no!!!

I had a pair of dykes one time (made in Chine like 92.4% of all the stuff you buy in America) - one of the cutters sheared off when I went to cut a wire...thank God it did not land in my eye!!

if they can't make a decent pair of dykes (wire cutting plyers)...what's their "crumple zone" going to look like after a car crash???

    LOL!!

Chinese can make cheaper stuffs, but when you talk about quality..they are hopeless.. India is full of crap chinese items but I dont fall for it. And when it comes to car, I sure am not going for it either. Germans are better (Think Bavarian baby)
