Trade.io: $88K in 2021, $75K in 2026. Is .io being valued differently now?

Trade.io recently sold for $75,000, compared with $88,000 for the same domain in 2021.

That's a $13K gap. For people buying domains for projects or resale, does this look like a change in .io demand, or just the normal difference between two buyers and sellers?

The $13,000 drop is most likely due to some negotiations. I know .io domains are still hot among crypto startups, but as with everything else, the market will get oversaturated and they'll be lucky to sell trade.io for $10K 5-6 years from now.

I wouldn't read too much into a single comp. $88K to $75K is about a 15% swing, and for private deals in this price range that's well within the normal spread of negotiation, seller motivation, payment terms, and whether the buyer came to the name or the name was shopped to them. Two data points don't make a trend, so you'd really want several comparable .io sales before saying anything about the extension as a whole.

One thing that does specifically overhang .io right now: the UK's deal to hand the Chagos Islands (British Indian Ocean Territory) to Mauritius. Since .io only exists as a ccTLD tied to that territory, it's raised genuine long-term questions about the extension's future, even though nothing has actually changed in practice. I'm not saying that's tanking .io - premium one-word .ios still move - but some of the risk discount buyers price into smaller ccTLDs arguably got bigger for .io than it was in 2021.

Fair point, Nate. Seeing the same name flip twice makes it tempting to compare numbers, but we have no idea how motivated either seller was to cash out. Interested to see what the buyer ends up building on it.
