As there was no forum for WhatsApp that I could see, I am posting here as Merta also owns WhatsApp. I received a WhatsApp call from an unknown (foreign) number today. Shortly after a system message appeared saying I had changed the timer for disappearing messages - but I had done no such thing. What has happened? Does this mean my account has been hacked?
Maybe or maybe not. Sometimes WhatsApp blocks your access on WhatsApp when you receive a call from an unknown number from a different country and this activity is considered spam or malicious. Sometimes these activities are done to hack accounts and demand money from the user. If you are not able to access your WhatsApp account and getting errors, just uninstall and install it again, if error persists, click on the option Appeal or Support. Type your concern and your account will be reactivated within 24hrs.
Might be or might not be. But to ensure your account security change your password immediately & enable two-step verification.
It's "Meta" not "Merta" but that doesn't explain why an internet marketing forum would be able to provide WhatsApp support.
Stuff like this made me think more about my online privacy and I highly recommend you to do the same. I stopped using my phone number while signing up for online platforms and have found a solution instead, I've been getting temporary phone numbers from service providers like AnonymSMS ( this one is my absolute favorite )
