I have heard about a lot of publishers that sold their sites, started transferring..and got ripped off. How? After the buyer got the domain and the files, he reported Paypal that he didn't, Paypal refunded him and fined the seller as well. How can this be prevented in general? Allen.H
don't use paypal ! OR if the buyer did not use a credit card and used funds available from his account then they have no protection and paypal will vouch with the person who will not make them lose money (usually the seller if the funds are already in the seller's bank account). When getting a dispute for a non tangible item just put "non tangible" in the tracking box and you are all set. Has worked for me a lot of times. Otherwise if paypal decides you are at fault even though you fulfilled your obligations and you don't mind having your account locked.... close your bank account and open a new one. Once you get the collection letters send back a cease and desist letter also stating you know about the fair debt act and they will leave you alone. That's of course if you were smart enough not to put your SS# in paypal.
The best way, is to provide proof of all conversations, and all discussions relating to the sale, and paypal will cooperate. I can say this, because, I know someone who has had an experience.
I'm talking about website sales, so it's obviously a non-tangible item. kgrad: so you're saying that if i have documentation of the PM's here and some emails PayPal will not vouch the buyer in case he decides to play around? Allen.H
You can use paypal for smaller amounts, if you think the amount is quite big for you, then go for escrow.
Some of them are 4-figures so it's quite a big amount for me, i don't get how escrow works though =\ Allen.H
I've found if I'm ever selling a website via Paypal I use a 3rd party person to handle everything, then I know I get paid and they get the website. Usually the 3rd person may charge £1.50 or something for helping out.
i don't think a refund is possible if the item is non-tangible. i got screwed by one of those paid-to-surf programs and it was quite obvious that the program owner was at fault. however, paypal actually wrote to me telling me that the item was not tangible and not purchased through ebay - so they will not interfere.
