How do you think it helps SEO? Honestly, other than getting some traffic, building some audience I don't see how it has anything to do with SEO.
We often use keywords in the short message in the social media post and that keywords will accompanied with hashtags to tell the social media site to index it immediately and rank in the search queries.

I would rather consider Social Networks as the source of getting additional traffic. There is a good targeting there you can use while building your links.
