Trick or treat

I have given this matter some thought. Every year at Halloween I go all out. I hang up skeletons, witches, scarecrows, goblins etc. on my outside wall. As the kids walk into my gate/yard they are greeted along the path by plastic pumpkins that are lit up electrically from the inside.

I have a get up on with a wig and makeup. In other words I've always made a big deal of it. Halloween is a special time for the kids. They get to dress up and are rewarded with free candy, chocolates and other goodies. How cool is that!:D

But this year I couldn't help but notice that none of my neighbors had put up any decorations at all. I walked around and chatted with some of them. The general consensus is that because of Covid-19 they were all cancelling Halloween this year. Why put yourself and the kids at risk?
Therefore I am also cancelling, how about you? Is it going to be business as usual or are you opting out?

I've decided to hang a sign out which will read: "Due to Covid-19 I will not be handing out treats this Halloween, sorry. Hope to see you next year!"

    That's sad :(
However, I think it's necessary to apply social distancing no matter what. It'll be horrible if the kids got the virus.
    Stay safe!

Couldn't agree more, we ought not to encourage the kids to put themselves at risk. Stay home when you can, a vaccine is just around the corner. In the meantime a few collective sacrifices must be made.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) strongly advises against celebrating Halloween this year. They described it as "high risk". Also we must consider that flu season is right around the corner. If one were to contract the flu along with Covid-19, it would be a health disaster.

Do you do Halloween in Algeria?
NZ does a half-hearted attempt but it's only for the little kids, they realise it's pretty lame by about 10yo. Because it's not part of our culture it's mostly driven by retailers who want a boost to their sales. We're totally open, no community transmission, but given we can't fill our sports stadiums I imagine parents won't be taking the risk.

Oh wow, I forgot that the flu season is on its way! That's gonna be interesting, it's better to stay home during this period.

Lol, we actually don't, but I like to support societies who do celebrate Halloween.

Very good, open minded attitude. If the world had more like you in it, we'd have far less conflict.

Our governor (RI) for some strange reason is insisting that Halloween must go on. This is despite the fact that she is a deep blue, nanny-state governor who has kept the lockdown on businesses going for months. But, she is firm on the fact that Halloween will not be cancelled this year. However, she is also mandating that trick-or-treaters must stay in small groups with no indoor parties. And the people giving out candy are not to open their door to dispense candy, but, instead, must leave it out on the doorstep on a tray (not in bowls) for the kids to come and pick up on their own. This is unworkable: one kid will come along and swipe all of the candy, leaving none for those behind them. We have had kids try to steal all the candy as we were holding the bowl in our hands; can you imagine just leaving candy out for anyone to come along and grab? My only option would be to put out the candy on the prescribed trays and then sit out there and watch from a proper distance to minimize the opportunity for greedy kids to take more than one treat. Might be a cold or rainy night and, if that is the case, I might not do it which would shut the whole operation down until next year.

We normally give out between 110 and 125 full-sized candy bars on Halloween. This year, I would be stocking up on the high end because it falls on a Saturday night. However, with the panic porn virus campaign still quite active, I am not sure how many kids will be out there. We have our stock of candy bars ready, but I am not sure how this is going to go. Right now, there also is a forecast of a chance of rain, so that will be a factor, as well.

So, I am in "stay tuned" mode...

That is precisely what would happen. It reminds me of when I left 3 days worth of food for my cat when I had to leave town. I had to double back as I had forgotten a file. It was only an hour later and the flipping cat had managed to down about 2 days worth in that short amount of time. It looked like it was pregnant!
