Is 4 levels too much?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by chechogr, Jul 28, 2020.

I have a real real estate website with many categories. Our website has many buildings and those buildings are published in the form: www.thedomain.com/neighborhood/building-name/

I need to build a subsection of the building and I am thinking of doing it in www.thedomain.com/neighborhood/building-name/subsection/

Is 4 levels too much? Not good for SEO?

If necessary or not any other option then can use but short and meaningful URL always good for SEO ..... Long URL is also not so bad because search engines can filter if need to show in result page but try always to avoid long URL.

I do try to avoid that though. The further back they are in the directory, the less link juice to the page.

If someone will be searching for that exact building, I don't think one level of hierarchy will change anything. Considering that additional level of info will be related to a building above it.

You are asking the wrong question.

Your question should be related to how your visitors use your website. Your visitor's experience should be the number one issue. All the SEO trickery in the world makes NO difference if you cannot retain your visitors.

Or at least turn some of those visitors into "conversions".

Which is why the term "SEO Friendly" being applied to these is such a pathetic joke, having little to do with why this approach to forming URI's was created in the first place.

I think that' s the biggest goof in all this, is that people act like these USER FRIENDLY URI's are for search, and search only. That's not their origins, it's not why they were originally implemented, and is just more of the SEO black hat BALD FACED LIES!

The purpose of this type of URI is so the USER can know where they go. What the content is before you click on it. That's why "link shorteners" are garbage and should be avoided where possible. Long verbose links exists to tell the USER where they are going before they click on it, which is why most browsers now place the full link somewhere on the screen when you hover over them. It helps establish trust.

Search only started to care about them at all as they started to be used as part of establishing their own ranking of trust, but it's such a miniscule factor of the rankings it's down around the keywords META in terms of import at this point.

IF a clear verbose name fits the 2048 character limit of a URI, I say do it. NOT because of some SEO dimestore hoodoo, five-and-ten voodoo, but because it makes it easier for YOU as the developer to clearly know where it's going, because it lets any future developers decipher the same, and because it helps users.

Because what's more friendly for USERS or even developers?

    /downtown/central_square_terrace/assisted_housing

    or

    ?n=1&b=8892&s=48

IF you're looking at the URI, I know which one I'd rather see and am more likely to trust.

Which is what friendly URI's are for: USERS!!!. The content of the page should be what you care about for search, just like how search should NOT give a flying fig about the content of your description META, TITLE tag, or any of your flipping style when it comes to ranking the page. CONTENT people! CONTENT!!!

Oh and side note, it's REALLY stupid how most user agents -- browsers, screen readers, or search engines -- are ACTUALLY standards compliant on URI's. There's SUPPOSED to be no size limit, but IE goes to 2083, most search engines stop at 2048, FF and Safari stop at 64k, and some have other limits. Sometimes the limit that's valid in the address bar doesn't even match the actual browser href/src limit!

This is exactly what was in my mind. You may give it a try for some listings and make your decision after seeing the results.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot does that even mean?!?

Again, given "friendly URI's" aren't even FOR search engines, much less more information / meaningful text should be a GOOD thing, just what the blazes are you even on about?

No, it really isn't. That's one of the black hat SEO BS bald faced lies used so people who PRETEND they are SEO Experts can justify their BS as they take advantage of clients who don't know any better.

Though I was taking more issues with the "further back in the directory" part, which seems to be "Engrish moist goodry me love you long time" gibberish.

Given the broken inaccessible website in your signature peddling a scam though, I guess that type of response shouldn't surprise me. Ever heard of accessible colour contrasts and how thin-glyph fonts are bad? What am I saying, of course you haven't. A+IMG doing H1's, job, H1 doing H2's job, SPAN doing LI's job, DIV doing P's job... yeah, you seem REAL qualified to talk about SEO... or web development for that matter with all the DIV for nothing, classes for nothing, presentational classes, static scripting in the markup...

It's always a laugh these clowns who have websites about SEO or some related junk scam artist "tool", but clearly don't know enough about on-page semantics to flap their yap about the topic; violating the most basic rule Matt Cutts gave us years ago: "write for the user, not the search engine!"

Well, you might want to visit this link then to see what happens when people PAY for @deathshadow's advice:

    https://forums.cutcodedown.com/index.php?topic=309.0

His advice here is FREE, and based on the LAWS currently on the books, you might want to take his advice now rather than possibly getting sued and be GLAD to PAY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS for his advice later.

If people actually built their websites properly in the first place, the so called "SEO profession" (which is just another load of scam artist bullshit) wouldn't even exist, nor would it need to.

Then I'd suspect survivorship and/or confirmation bias; as you shouldn't be so confident.

If you can't even build accessibly, you certainly can't build for search. Thus, you've either been blowing clients full of smoke for 13 years, or deluding yourself. That someone claiming to know about SEO would even be associated with a site with such obvious failings at the most basic aspects of on-page SEO and accessibility? Greatly compromises your credibility, in a manner I deal with about twice a month from client after client I have to bail out of that type of broken, nonsensical, trash. And EVERY time there's at least one clown I end up having to tell site owners / executives to fire because they THINK they know SEO/site development when they know but two things.

... and Jack left town. That lack of knowledge being why they dive for those monuments of stupidity that are off the shelf CMS and even more idiotic the "Framework mentality"

Where people vomit up broken gibberish HTML like this:

    Code (markup):
You've slopped together off the shelf answers that are the antithesis of good accessibility practices, making your opinions and advice on SEO effectively meaningless. You don't even have logical document structure, which likely means for "SEO" you're peddling the same ignorant black hat scam artist BS as the majority of people who CLAIM to do SEO... when they're not even qualified to write a single line of HTML.

Which is why most of the people who run around claiming to be "SEO Experts" are more often than not predatory scam artists with less business legitimacy than Amway or Mary Kay.

I am very happy with my SEO knowledge and do not need any help from you. Thanks for your advice though.
