Reading that feels like they are going to ask websites to stop featuring guestposts altogether, and EVEN if someone tries to publish anything remotely like guestpost then the links will get a major hit. That's what I am getting the feel of from it.

Also, does it mean people will look for other ways to build links e.g. message boards and forums?

How will google find out that its a guest post?
Some companies have multiple writers making posts on their websites, mostly large media houses.
How will google know which one is a paid post and which one is something sincere inhouse?

Mueller's comment suggests that all guest posts, paid or not should be no-followed. And that suggests to me that they will eventually pull the flow of link juice for guests.
I couldn't tell you for certain how they differentiate between in house and guest posts, though I believe they can probably do it. But when you have guest posts, the signature usually leads you away to a different website. In house posts, (and even some guest posts) usually just send you to an email or an internal page.

    Thanks for explaining that.
These are all normal marketing methods as well.
A guest post on a nice blog/website can bring good direct traffic.
2 days back I came across another thread, google against posting reviews of products and linking to product buy page, again a perfectly valid marketing method.

Its so weird, google started depending on links as votes.
Now its telling people, do not link to things you like or profit from...

I don't sell guest posts on my site, but still google controlling these is like destroying the basic structure of the web itself...

I always call Google the Citizens United of the Internet, lol. They really turned up the volume on the importance of linking. As I am sure you know, before this change, you could have a decent ranking without a lot links, at least in many markets. Much harder today.

But at least they aren't penalizing us for these review and guest links.

Your point about Google not liking links to a product buy page is news to me. May explain some of the problems I am having with one site.

That thread about "posting reviews and linking to product page" is here in this forum itself, just came across it 2 days back.
Somebody pasted a portion from google guidelines.
I can't seem to find the thread now... I was very surprised too.

In my case, there is no monetary exchange, just a site referring traffic to another site to make a purchase. Google Medic is also involved to some degree. I just need to take some time to digest this. Thanks for the help.

Yes! Guest blogging still works in 2019. Bottom line is that guest posting does work. The facts speak for itself and show that it is still a relevant way to gain high-quality links.

YES, guest posts are still a good way to get quality backlinks and these posts can certainly help you to improve your search engine rankings but not every guest post is going to provide you good results. You should keep few things in mind while doing guest postings. Here are some of them:
    1. Always use unique/original content
    2. Always post on blogs which are related to your niche
    3. Always post on blogs which have good domain authority and less spam score

I know I should post a separate thread about this but since we are all talking about Google's latest developments...did any one see unusual stats past weekend?
