I am a professional SEO and have optimized lots of websites. I also improve their page speed, but I still haven't seen it affect ranking in any way. I do believe it is probably a signal, but I certainly can't confirm it. To me, it is just something for SEOs to obsess over. It is rare that any of my new clients have a page speed so low that it affects user experience.

Yes hosting can impact SEO. Always host your site with the host with not much down time. Also host your site in the area you want to sell your product.

Well done, Oso, if your pages are loading fast. That will be pleasing to visitors, which is an important metric and will keep them more favorably inclined to your websites. As far as page speed affecting ranking, I have no empirical proof either way. But with our pages loading at 500ms or less, I am confident that those speeds are increasing our users' satisfaction. Keep up the good work!

Not a hugely determining factor but it is a signal. Google does measure your page speed but how it affects ranking is really hard to tell. I would say it's only noticeable for hugely competitive niches.

Of course, It matters. If you are on shared hosting and the neighborhood websites are bad, you will have to suffer due to bad neighborhood as you will be sharing the same ip.

It is like sharing a flat with criminals.

Besides, hosting affects speed which is a ranking factor ( which you mentioned) . If your users are based in different countries you can use CDN to deliver fast results.

Recommended action is to get a dedicated ip on a good server. You can opt for VPS or dedicated hosting if your budget allows.

Uptime is very important for SE especially google during updates. So from the web hosting side that is vital to have good uptime first of all.

Google has indicated site speed is one of the signals used by its algorithm to rank pages. A slow page speed means that search engines can crawl fewer pages using their allocated crawl budget, and this could negatively affect your indexation.
So, website should be pretty fast and placed closer to users.
About page speed you can read here https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/v5/about

After page loading speed issues at the end of the day, hosting has nothing to do with SEO but building its reputation to the users would make a difference.

Downtime, consider downtime. If your host has too much downtime and your website is not accessible, then that will certainly affect rankings.

Also if your host is hosting too many websites on one server, and one of those websites is eating up server resources then too your website might become inaccessible at times, again affecting rankings.
Good hosting providers monitor such overloads and take measures so that bad performance of one account will not affect other accounts on same server.

Some server IPS are also blacklisted, but that mostly affects email, probably not websites or their rankings.

    Hi.
I have read this elsewhere as to be true. With off-site hosting your website can sit anywhere on any server, and you have no control over who your 'neighboring content provider" is. So they could tick off Google, and Google could flag the whole server as potentially problematic. Maybe stop sending spiders to crawl, etc. Also, all site content on the same server pointing to itself comes off as unnatural and penalty could be assessed on that server as well for unreliability/content bias. At fault/not at fault. Could happen either way.

    @davilama2682
    This is so not true.
Google does not "bans" servers by not sending its bots.
It does not indexes your site by its IP address
    (http://127.0.0.1/~yourDomain)
It indexes your site by its toplevel domain name
    example.com
If google has to penalise a site, it will penalise its domain, not the server. Don't make up things...
Google is very much familiar with the concept of "shared hosting"
By the way, what is "off-site" hosting? You wrote that...

I don't make things up. I said I read it somewhere; and it was in response to another member who had posted in the thread that I had quoted - stating the similar "phenomenon" of "website/domain neighboring" that I had read out about and wanted to elaborate on. I did not say it was true. I was discussing a concept. How do I know what Google does? My language is explicit - I use words: potential, maybe, flag. I did not say "ban." And this does happen, case in point, if your website is found on adult content server and you don't know about it it will be flagged as potentially being adult content itself. Even if people are running malware/spyware software through servers, your content hosted on that server will be flagged as potential spamming content.

I know what I wrote, thanks! Allow me to elaborate upon it for you. Off-site hosting is when you outsource your hosting somewhere else. It is about location. It is not in-house hosting of your content. Your servers are not on-site at your facility. You don't own/manage the servers themselves. That is considered off-site hosting.

Thanks for clarifying what you meant by off-site.
However I stil do not agree with your adult content theory. If my site is not hosting any adult content, then my website cannot be classified as adult website, simply because some other website on the server is an adult website.

Almost all webhost allow adult content as long as its not child porn or sick stuff like that.
Webhosts have hundreds of website on one shared server.
You are saying if any one of those has adult content, then all those hundreds of websites will serve penalty.
    That is impossible to digest.

Same is with malware/adware etc. If my website is not throwing a malware to the client, then my website will not suffer this penalty, even if other sites on same server are doing so.

I know you cannot know what google does or does not, neither do I, but whhen something is a secret then its obvious that many assumptions will float about that secret.
But these are merely assumptions, not everything is true.
Other places where you read this, they are also assuming, no facts based on observations...

You are welcome. And just keep this in mind, something could be "flagged" and not "penalized." Similar to how spam is flagged in email. Servers could be flagged as host of controversial content. This could have subsequent effects on the sites hosted on that server - but they are not penalized, per say, by the flagger of the content. It is an identification modality applied upon the server for later referencing purposes - by whomever may wish to access or list the already crawled/indexed/flagged content. Once something is flagged - it could be categorized as something people may not wish to view. This could affect website categorizing and future website listings and site traffic.

Though not relating to SEO, I once faced a case where my site was sharing CloudFlare IP bucket with hacked websites. My outbound emails were silently dropped, cause my website IP address was blacklisted.
My guess is that such things do affect website reputation.

But it does not mean that it is always bad. Only in specific cases, it can be bad.

Not that it is bad being flagged - what is worrisome is that this effect will be unbeknownst to you. Because you do not know who your website shares server space with. You are pushing your marketing and look, like you said, it was silently dropped. Thank you.
