Oh, never send random people direct affiliate offers on Twitter. That's a terrible marketing idea. The trick to successful social media marketing is NOT to sell, but to build a following through personal interaction, genuine interest in the other person, and honest communication. Your followers who care about you, are more likely to take an interest in your products or services. No one likes the "buy my stuff because I want your money" mentality. All that will do is drive people further away.

Think of it this way.... do you like it when random businesses call you on the phone and try to sell you something you don't need? Of course not. So don't be that random business on social media. ;)

The last couple of years I don't see the same oomph coming from there.

A tip for business? Grow your following (paraphrasing Wesley) "...by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, as long as ever you can."

Here is another Twitter Tip for your Wednesday :) :)

Find a Twitter Account for a related Business (or even your competition) and follow active users on their profile or users that have commented or retweeted posts.

I always recommend quality over quantity - you want your audience to be active & relevant on Twitter. You can have 5000 followers that are completely inactive or fake and will not send you any traffic.

@Sarah - Dufferin Media Hey since you guys into Twitter and stuff, do you know if they've introduced something new regarding following/unfollowing people. In the past I used to unfollow people without losing just as many people back. Now it seems like if I unfollow 200 people I lose just as many followers. Seems weird, since I don't know how it all may be connected. Plus, I usually try to unfollow profiles that I started following 4-5-6 months ago.

There are a lot of fake following programs out there (which follow & unfollow quickly) so the key is to qualify who you follow - make sure they are relevant active users.
One trick is to find a similar or competitors account and see who is actively commenting / retweeting posts - follow them!
Quality over quantity is my motto.

Unfollowing people wouldn't in itself result in you getting unfollowed by other accounts. It is a good business practice in my opinion to audit your followers & following regularly and unfollow inactive accounts.

    Hope this helps!

Well, I do manually follow and unfollow users. I try to avoid accounts that look like junk. I wonder if more and more people are using what you called fake following programs and as a result I lose users simply because the programs detect that I unfollowed them. Or something like that.

Yes and no. Some links are banned, some links will not produce commissions since they are shortened by twitter (ex: t.co/Wds1sdcQ). It all depends on an aff. program.

Thank You for reply. I think link shortening is not a problem. Under promoting I mean letting people know where they can sign up to become affiliates with our affiliate program.

These days people are using tracking websites, which will show a list of people who recently unfollowed them. Then those members can quickly unfollow all those who unfollowed them.
This is probably why you are losing followers when you unfollow people.

    Twitter is not magic.
I am sure you also come across hundreds of links when you browse your feed on twitter. Do you check all those sites?
    Certainly no.
Other people are also doing the same.

It takes lot of time to build followers and even more to get decent traffic from twitter.
Its an ongoing process, will not happen in a day, not even in a month.
Keep doing it patiently, and eventually you will see results.

Follow other people who are following similar business accounts as yours.
Those people will start following you back.

Make use of images and videos in your tweets. Those get more visibility than just plain text tweets.

See if you can get involved in a trending hashtag conversation.
Make some good comments there and people will follow.

This is not helpful for people who are writers and do not produce visual images or video content. Written word is harder to push on Twitter - that is the problem I am having in obtaining followers on the platform. Visual content is arbitrary and subjective. Written content published must be interpreted verbatim as author intended it be. (I guess I could include a picture of a cat along with every posting of my essays I want to promote).

@davilama2682 because it's not what Twitter was intended for. It's hard to push anything meaningful in 280 characters.

I totally understand your problem there. However, there are tools that can help.
Take a look at this image maker tool below:
    https://vagminetech.com/post/LogoBannerImageMaker

Scroll down to see an example of a large size image this tool generates, which you can upload to twitter, along with your 100-150 character tweet heading, and a URL to follow.

This is a direct link to use it:
    https://VagMineTech.com/imageMake/

Write your article text in the textarea box, choose colors, fonts, styles, and click Show Image button.
Save that image to your computer, and upload along with your tweet.
No need to upload a random cat image...
You can attach your article body as an image to your tweet!

For best visibility, choose contrast colors, and use a standard image size like 600x600 px or similar.
You can add your website logo in the generated image, for branding etc.
