Removing my phone number from the gmail accounts I no longer control

Discussion in 'Google' started by sarahk, Jul 22, 2019.

At a past job we needed to do some log in & app testing so we created a number of email addresses. The gmail accounts needed a phone number and I used mine. I've left that job and no longer have access to the list of email addresses but would like my phone number removed from them.

I expected, within Google's security settings, to see a "your phone number is also used on these accounts..." and to be able to unlink them.

    Has anyone ever done this?
Know where I need to go?

If you remove your phone number from your gmail then If you forget the password you looses the chance to recover password.

You cannot remove your phone number without logging into the account and removing them.

I managed to remember one of the accounts and was able to reset the password and delete the account - one down, 3 or 4 to go...

Yes, you need to access that gmail account to remove your phone number.

    Does Gmail delete inactive accounts?

If all else fails then go to your phone section of your Google accounts, next to your number(s) select Delete Remove Number. Then go to the recovery phone section and re- add any other number(s).
What I'm advocating is that you replace your good number(s) with any made up or defunct number(s) of your choosing.

I've been able to do that with one of the accounts but there's 3 or 4 that I can't remember the login details for and no longer have access to the master list.

It's not a big deal, I don't plan to create any more google accounts, I just didn't particularly want an ongoing link to that particular contract.

Had a call from Indonesia yesterday afternoon when I was out - thought the guy said "vin-do", turned out to be zendesk. He was calling about that same contract, not sure why he needed to call but it seems the company I was contracted to has been slack about updating their primary contact details on important services.

It's easy. You can log in to the account which is connected to your Gmail. If you don't remember the password then do forget password thing. Log In and remove that number from that account.

I need Google to let me know which accounts are linked to a device and let me de-authorise them. They can then request those accounts link to another phone number, give them a security alert. If my ex-employer is still using the accounts they can do that, if they're abandoned then Google may want to delete them.

    https://accounts.google.com/signin/usernamerecovery?continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F&service=mail&ss=1&scc=1&rm=false&osid=1&hl=en
    Code (markup):
Doesn't this do that? Enter your phone number and AFAIK you only need to know the name, not the username itself, to be able to get a list of users asaociated with that particular phone number.

The accounts I managed tho remove were the ones where I could remember the fictitious usernames we'd invented
