Expired Domain: 301 Redirect or New Site

I just bought a domain with very strong backlinks.

Should I redirect to main site (same topic) or use the domain to build a new content site and then promote my site on that site?

What would you do and why?

 

I am not sure if backlinks redirecting still works. I would use it to build a new site.

 

In the past I have always just redirected the purchased domain to an existing site. Saves a lot of labor building a new site. But be sure to find all the 404s and make sure you save those links to the internal pages by redirecting them to internal pages of your existing site. These links start to disappear fast, so be sure to do it soon.

If you decide to go the route of building a new site for the domain, still consider temporarily redirecting all of those pages. You can lose quite a few links in just a couple of months. It might also help you decide if you like what the additional link juice is doing for your existing site.

 

I think I will go the route of creating a new website.

This domain has some very high authority newspapers linking to it.

 

That would be probably the best idea for you.
