Yes absolutely they will work. In todays hectic world no one has the time to read and go over the long stuff. The short articles that get right to the point, are the ones that will garnish attention.

The point is whether or not the concerned post is serving its purpose. Build content user friendly not search engine friendly.

Say, you are announcing your software update. Then a title along with a short description of it say two to three lines. And a list of the features that has been updated (that makes say four points). Whole thing should wrap up within 100 words.

A post can be 20 words long or 2000 words long. As long as, it delivers the information as it is intended to do, its fine. I hope you get my point.

Short articles are always good for those who are too much busy and don't have much time to read big articles. For example News related. But if you talk about information and learn. It can be subject should oriented only and easy learn or understand. People might like you with some good examples.

if the message you are making can fit in 400 words you can try make an infographics from it as well, there are a lot of tools that can help you with that, and the pictures does help with SEO now.

 

I think quality is very important but it must also be acknowledged that many people don't read on the web for long periods of time.
