How to promote a Digg clone?

Discussion in 'Social Networks' started by inman, Dec 19, 2006.

Couple of days back, I started a digg like site. It is not exactly a digg clone in every aspect as my site focusses on a specific niche. Only the script is the same.

Now my question is how to promote such a site. I also own a couple of blogs and I promoted them through digg quite successfully. But you can't promote a digg clone through digg. I made an attempt and users have already started abusing me :D

Now what other options for promotion do I have?

It was not exactly started with a revenue generation idea. I just wanted to start a popular site. Therefore I am not planning to put any ads until the site becomes popular.

    The site is http://www.mythsbusted.com

It is a digg clone where users can post popular myths they encounter on the internet.

Nice site, try asking some bloggers to write about your site.

Agreed, buy links on all the other digg clones out there. Another plan might be to go the myspace route, their demographic might be part of the "fun facts" genre.

    Good luck!

Not exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking more of along the lines of if you have a Dog site, promote it on other Dog sites.

think to add features that visitors will find usefull, and they are not on digg, you need something different, to make visitors to like your website. Your goal is set high, but if you do the job well you will reach it. good luck with the website.

You can try submitting as comments (non spammingly) to different blog posts around the web about myths.

I read through your site. I'll generate some marketing tips for you.
Simulate or experiment with some of the myth, make a video/blog/article about it. After that, you should know what to do. Youtube it, then submit the youtube video to digg, yidi yidi yada yada, ya know the trick ;)

Let me give you an example from your site.
I saw the one that says "Eating turkey makes you sleepy"

This can be a good one to start off with
Make a video of a guy eating a turkey for lunch and get knock out at work afterward. Make it funny so it can achive the goal of viral marketing. Video doesn't even need to be super high quality, just make sure it is funny and make sure when you submit them you tag it with cool title and tags.
Even if your video sucks, you can still get a few hundred people to see it and know about your site. With a site like yours, it is probably very easy to find a topic to market.

When it comes to marketing, it is all about creativity and ideas, do something unique to attractive visitors and utilize the available resources :)
