I doubt whether they're enforced properly. We even have rampant child abuse here & school teachers get away with caning kids.

I guess he's mainly talking two kinds of child abuse...one as u rightly said is beating.

The other is child labour...there r lots of children from poor families who are forced to work and earn by their parents.

Sexual abuse is also there, but its not something rampant or unique in India. It happens all over the world ...in small percentages.

Sickening. Why are not the parents working???? Do you all have a problem with human trafficking? How easy or hard is to adopt a child in India?

Thanks in advance for answering the questions. ;)

Beating, yes. And it's further troublesome that it's socially acceptable here for children to be physically "punished" by teachers & parents.

Even if parents are working (as laborers) the parent's income is often insufficient to support the family. People in rural areas breed exponentially here, it isn't abnormal for a household that is in utter poverty to have 7 or 8 children.

Yep kiddos get beaten here and theres no law against that. Some Americans support that notion though, the ones who have kids that called 911 after they were slapped :D

About Child labour, there is a VERY LITTLE amount of FORCED child labor right now in India, some kids from poor families just want to help their families and thats why they work. Forced Child labor has been minimized by the Indian Government

All this is very sad. My heart goes to these people. How much US dollars a month a family of four needs to live comfortable in India? (including rent, food, transport, etc)

    1. Why does the elephant looks so "funny"? ("funny" as "weird")

This is not a wild elephant. He is a Temple Elephant by name Guruvayur Padmanabhan

    2. Is this picture taken in the country side?

Yes this picture is taken in the country side - A small village of Kerala called 'Tattamangalam' (Lat:10.67. & Long: 76.70) The exact place from where this picture is captured.

    3. What the heck is the elephant doing walking in the middle of a street?

Elephants are one of the important part of Hindu Temple festivals in Kerala and in most part of India for that matter.

Oh I can answer that one in as much detail as required but I'll try to be concise.

It takes a month's time before the child can be given for adoption once the child had been identified as an orphan. The interested families can pitch in with a form which details about their occupation yearly income, education and family background, etc. This is necessary to ensure that the child goes to the best family.

Then there are certain formalities which do not take too long and the child is given for adoption. The organization responsible then follows up with the family for a year to ensure that the child did go into the right hands.

So I would say that it is pretty easy and doesn't take long. However there are organizations that do make a business out of this too. That is facilitated more by the preferences of the adopting parents. More so because they prefer to have a child which is a few days old and resembles them in color and all. They dont want to show that the child was adopted but that it actually is their own. :(

Most of them prefer to have a girl child. However the families that truly want to adopt a child prefer only a female child and care less about other things mentioned above.

    Depends on where they live.

I posted earlier that in India people earning less than Rs.3600 (US $80)/year are officially considered to be below the poverty line.

For rural areas: $50/month might do it, to live comfortably. Here in Mumbai, a family of four would require atleast $300/month to survive IMO.

What if they cook their own food & they ride buses, live in a dilapidated apartment building where the family's past 4 generations have lived & don't have to pay rent, conserve electricity & hardly ever use the phone, have no internet connectivity, have no entertainment other than cable tv (thats just Rs.400/month)... They may be able to barely survive with $300/month. There are several families living such a sad existence even in Mumbai. I think you are right however, $700 is more like it for a family of four.
