Can anyone point me to a good tutorial for migrating a vB forum from one server to another?

If you have done this before and have a process I'd love to see it.

    thx,

    Basically:

    - Close Forum
    - Download Files
    - Dump Database
    - Import Database on the new Server
    - Upload Files on the new Server
    - Change vB config settings
    - Run vBulletin Maintenance Tools
    - Open Forum again

If you need help drop me a line.

    Who's your new host?
Some hosts can help you on this .

This is basically it...Don't forget to update the nameservers on your domain, of course...and you will need to create a database on the new server with the proper username and password before importing it.

If you have a dedicated server you can import them via whm if you have it, if not, then it is simple enough to backup, download, and import DB along with files. Change the config if you have to and viola.

This is great stuff guys, thanks.

My fear comes from not being able to test the installation before I move the name space. How do you do that?

Will these steps work for migrating the site to a different domain name to test first before moving the production site?

For example move forum.com to forumtest.com and testing to make sure I did everything correct.

You can access your new server using an IP instead of the domain name (you do this if you have not updated the nameservers or are waiting for them to update)

You can also use ip addres ~ username if you are on a cpanel server or just the ip address of the account if it is an ip solely for that domain. I will help if you need it.

Right, sorry, that is what I meant...unless you have purchased a unique IP, you will need to go to:

    http://ipaddress/~username

ipaddress is the IP address of the new server and username is your username for your new hosting. Sometimes, if the host is small, you can also access your new site at: http://hostdomain/~username

This is on a dedicated server using Plesk. Going to the IP address doesn't seem to be working.

Just point a subdomain to it via DNS entries and add it in plesk.

Where did you get the IP from...are you sure it is the correct IP?

    Have you tried http://ipaddress/~username ?
