    Question is too vague. If you are asking how much money does it take to create an online business to compete with Ebay and Shopify the answer is broad. You can start an auction site with little to no money but to complete with those companies who employ thousands and have spent hundreds of millions you most likely would need quite the budget. If your question is how much money do you need to sell ON ebay then it simply depends on what you are looking to sell. You can open an ebay store with very little money. However, the returns will be small.

    $1000 seems like a lot, but when you factor all the things that you need to build a good website and product (as well as maintain a good customer growth) it's pretty accurate. Also it could depend on where you are marketing the product (ex. US high competition and high CPC, while Brazil middle competition, low CPC) and what do you plan to sell.

    Apparel is currently holding the majority of the market, but you have to factor in the high percentage of products returned.
