When you say SEO .. first thing you want is rank good in google. Google has made certain rule to rank good of which SSL is prime requirement to rank better , they say https is very important requirement. This simple fact makes SSL important for SEO.

Since Google is focusing on improved user experience and security of users, having HTTPS protocol for your website or blog is now one of the ranking factors as disclosed by the Google in this post https://security.googleblog.com/2014/08/https-as-ranking-signal_6.html
For example, if you are working on a keyword that has competitors with HTTP protocol, Google will definitely give you the top rank to your site if you are using HTTPS than other sites using HTTP only because you are not compromising on users’ security while others are doing.

In a way it doesn't. Ultimately, it will depend on your site as a whole. There are plenty of http sites that rank fairly high.

If your site do any kind of money related transaction or some thing of such sort then only its needed. Google says that sites will get rank boost but many sites do just fine without https.

An SSL certificate defines that the website is secure or not.If you don't have SSL then Google will detect your site as malicious and not user-friendly and also not SEO friendly. SSL creates a great impact or site ranking.

Automatically enable HTTPS on your website with EFF's Certbot, deploying Let's Encrypt certificates. https://certbot.eff.org/

    OVH using - https://www.ovh.pl/ssl/

The question “Why should I care about HTTPS?” is an easy one to answer: Because Google says so.

    Benefits of HTTPS:
    • Your data is encrypted and secure. No plain text is ever passed. This is an important aspect of e-commerce transactions but also for even logging into your website.
    • Google has officially said that HTTPS is a ranking factor.
    • The green padlock bar helps build trust and credibility for your visitors.
    • Avoid the Chrome warning that is coming in January 2017 which is going to mark HTTP pages that collect sensitive information as non-secure.
    Hope this helps!

This is the bottom line. I started as a hobbyist hacker/pentester before I did development. Starting with LAN the first thing I would do after sucessfully aircracking or Reaver Brute forcing onto the wifi souce. Ettercap SSL strip combo. Essentially if there wasn't ssl encryption on the LAN, I could infiltrate absolutely everything. You could even get keystrokes with Nibbler, it wasn't at a constant like a shell session but that should tell you something.

Additionally as far as SEO how bout if you don't occasionally get Red screen of the deathed? Yes if you just happen to be unlucky logging into your admin panel you can set off an alarm within your browser which will make every single user that hits your site see that red screen malware. YOU DON'T WANT THAT. I'm not saying to pay for SSL either, because this is literally what it is.

Cloudflare or Certbot will handle it for you

In addition to the direct ranking factor, Google is planning to make an update to Chrome this summer that might hurt your traffic.

Sites that accept payment without an SSL installed are going to have a big "Not Secure" warning sign in Chrome. This might cause less people to click through to your site out of fear. You've got a few weeks left, so I would go ahead and start working on it now.

Like the others said, SSL is a ranking factor and these days you can install it easily via CPanel with Let's Encrypt or AutoSSL for free.

It is quite clear that HTTPS offers security that many Internet users ask for and even demand, so it is absolutely the way to go if you would like your website to be favored by Google. Aside from that, there are some additional benefits for SEO that should be considered.Increased rankings is the obvious one. As noted, Google confirmed the small ranking boost of sites using HTTPS. Like many ranking signals, it is difficult to isolate on its own, but it is definitely something to keep in mind. On a positive note, the value of switching to HTTPS may increase over time.Referral data is preserved when traffic passes to an HTTP website. This is different than what happens when traffic goes through an HTTP site – it is taken away and looks as if it is direct with no referral.HTTPS will add privacy and security to a website and SEO goals through: verification of the website that it is the right one on the server, preventing tampering by third parties, making the website more secure for visitors, and encrypting all communication like URLs, which in turn protects things like credit card numbers and browsing history.

https means secure protocol website and of course if the backlinks are based on this protocol then it significantly counted as quality links.

Google had already declared back in 2014 that HTTPs can help you to get website's rank in SERP.

There are other advantages of HTTPs:

    1. Security & Privacy
    2. Ranking Boost
    3. Referral traffic

To get all these benefits of HTTPs, install an SSL certificate.

SSL is only important for your site if it becomes a website viable of making on-site purchases. When you have a website that uses a payment gateway from your site, you can see why Google will give you the enhancement point for security on your site.
If your site is simply a blog that does not sell anything. No need for SSL

If your site uses 3rd party payment module's (Paypal) SSL isn't an importance to Google.

Google will take points away for having a site that sells product through the site and doesn't use SSL.

Google is advocating about HTTPs for long. Previously it was a suggestion to use HTTPs on your website but now it becomes a compulsion as Google clearly mentioned that it would have a SEO value associated i.e. HTTPs is a ranking factor now (although not a strong factor). Now google is planning to show a "not secure" warning in the padlock of Chrome browser from the next update. It will affect website uses as visitors will go away by seeing the warning.

Using HTTPs is a necessity now a days for all the websites. It has more security advantages than SEO ranking. Using SSL certificate will make website communication secure. All the communication between browser and server will be encrypted.

HTTPS is a secure web protocol commonly used by e-commerce websites to provide secure transactions for its users. Google has been actively campaigning to website owners to convert to HTTPS, and has been rewarding secure URLs with a minor SEO boost.

Google wants to provide users with a secure and beneficial web experience so encouraging website owners to switch to HTTPS is obvious.
Making the switch to HTTPS might not benefit all website owners and it requires careful research and action in order to make a clean conversion.
