    If ( they say ) directories are not effective any more why are directory scripts cost so much to buy?

    yes they do cost a lot.. but you can go for free on..

    To me.. i think directories are still helpful.. despite the fact its a long term process..

    However, directories today are more on paid terms instead of free submissions but as usual you need to replenish if the premium account's budget is depleted.

    maybe you should consider something else.
    besides the cost, maybe your directory will succeed one
    day, maybe it wont, then on top of 100s or 1000s of dollars
    in SEO, then you have to deal with constant spam submissions.

    It does not sound as if business would be for you.
    If I sold you my car for $1, would you be able to afford
    the gas, maintenance and monthly insurance to keep the car running....?
    (from what I can tell, it does not seem so....)

    it does not make sense to setup a business online if you are griping
    over the cost of the script or promoting your business that could take
    years to get off the ground, or never get off the ground....

    My guess is that there are only a few people developing them, because the demand dropped for them dropped so much. If there are only a handful of people that work on coding them then they could all agree on a certain price range for their products.

    Directory script is very effective and showing result of script in abstract manner, most of people understand that format and it is time saving, so it become popular.
    And hence cost of directory script is high

    A lot of directory scripts seem to moving toward business platforms with added features to move along with the times, There are a few wordpress themes / plugins but this can be expensive.
