    I am looking at starting a directory.

    Obviously most domains (widgetsdirectory.com, widgetsworldwide.com, findwidgets.com) are gone so I am looking for some inspiration.

    Anyone have some tips?

    You can add some suffixes to those names like 360, 247, 365, then you will have

    widgetsdirectory360
    widgetsdirectory247
    widgetsdirectory365

    This isn't my website nor do I gain anything from sharing it but recently was turned onto it while looking for a domain name myself. LeanDomainSearch.com you put in your search term say widget and it gives you available domain names and includes availability on social networks. Very lite website and super useful IMHO. Hope that helps!

    I'd be more worried about your business plan than your domain name. Directories are a poor choice financially. The best will be niche related and heavily curated - and the niche will point you towards the right domain name.

    Why don't you brand your directory with something unique? YourNameWidgetDirectory, or something similar?

    I will personally avoid adding numbers to the domain.
