Thanks for the article, very useful.

What most of the people agree on, blend!

However, I have found that blending is not always the best option. On proxy sits for example, multiple color pallettes have worked the best for me. When I instituted them, my CTR jumped 500%.

The most important thing that most are too lazy to do is to test a lot and actually do something rather than reading all day about what others are doing. But testing is key as different site types and visitors respond differently.

Very true. Even what seems like a good setup might be just a drop in the bucket, but you'll never know if you don't try things and keep a record of the results. Check out my homepage in my profile for a free adsense site.

Yeah your correct. They are cracking down. That is why I recommend contacting them and asking. They are still allowing some I guess in certain formats. If I am uncertain I always send them a email or call and they are always very helpful. That is what I recommend.

    Glad you enjoyed it!

Good for you! Glad you tested it on different sites. You are correct and I have found this to be true. Some sites work very very well with blending and others work very very well with color rotating or vice versa.
Here is a article I wrote on it: Rotate Google Adsense Color Schemes

You can go overboard on either and both have their bad points especially with specific design situations. Testing is always the best thing.

Very true. Testing is were alot of 'webmasters' fail. Good point

That's totally true. Forums are almost overrated in a sense, though they definitely teach a lot. But you can't rely on other people's experience, EVER.

I have a friend who never visits forums and is banking $XX,XXX a month on YPN. Just goes to show.

Try to change adsense ad placement once in a while:) That helps to increase CTR sometimes....

Really helpful! It seems there is a line of consistency in the answers from those particular webmasters you interviewed.

Honestly, how to do you distingusih content from ads. I think they should never have allowed that in the first place.

It's interesting that there is big emphasis on blending ads with the content of a site and that, as stated in the interviews, this can make a difference of up to half your ctr.

Surely blending ads to the same colour scheme is at least in part a form of deception similar in fashion to displaying images near to an advert. Some visitors are presumably clicking on text presuming that it is an internal link when in fact it takes them to a completely different site.

In all cases you are not physically grabbing hold of a visitors hand and forcing them to click your advert. Therefore, if clicked, whatever the text of the advert relates to is of interest to the browser.

So the 5 Adsense rules of success are:

    1. Rich content
    2. Fresh content
    3. Niche content
    4. more content
    5. Blend the ads with the content

    nice Article, very helpful

Yes you can see that to a certain degree yet they did have their own ways of doing things. It was a short interview. I am hoping to do a longer one next time to go in-depth with these guys.

Not always. Some sites blending sucks with. As a webmaster noted above it is all about testing. Test different placements, blending, rotations etc. See what performs best. Also make sure you do not change anything outside the Adsense control panel without asking their permission or you could get suspended.

    Glad everyone enjoyed the article!

Ooops - I am 'this guy'!

I've emailed Adsense now for their thoughts on the matter and will review my layout once I hear from them. The recent announcement certainly helps to clarify this issue.

However, I do wonder, if I removed ALL the thumbnails from the page would it be any more or less confusing for visitors? That's certainly an option although it would reduce the ease of use of the site.

    cheers

The difference between blending and putting unrelated images next to the ad is that with images, the user clicks the ad because of the image. They're not interested in what the ad has to say.

With blending you're just "tricking" the user into reading the ads and if they happen to click on them then it's because they thought the link looked interesting. The only thing that sold them on clicking was the ad itself.

I don't imagine Google just does things for the heck of it. They probably have statistics to back up the move to ban images next to ads.
