It's safe to assume it has been.

Has there ever been damage? Now that's another thing entirely

Google is a huge company, you could hack into some experimental server run by an obscure group of braniacs and nobody would ever know.

I am actually thinking it has not been. Attempts to hack and actually being hacked are on the opposite sides of the spectrum. At least, I don't recall ever reading or seeing that it was hacked.

Google possibly hacked but they will not reveal it because of their reputation.

Google, one of the most valuable domains on the Internet, was mistakenly sold for $12

Google paid $12,000 to get it back.

The buyer was a former Googler, Sanmay Ved, who discovered Google on the list of domains available for sale on September 29. He bought it, charging the $12 fee to his Discover card, never really expecting the transaction to go through.

"I was hoping I would get an error at sometime saying transaction did not go through, but I was able to complete purchase, and my credit card was actually charged!" he wrote in a post on LinkedIn last fall.

He told CNNMoney he made the purchase simply out of curiosity.

"I thought at some point in time it would block me out, but I wanted to see how far it would go," he said.

Ved worked for 5-1/2 years at Google, according to his LinkedIn page, and likes the company enough to have its logo as his profile picture on Facebook. He is now an MBA student at Babson College in suburban Boston.

Google (GOOGL, Tech30) admits Ved owned the domain, albeit very temporarily. The company said that it offered him $6006.13, which is a numerical version of the word Google. "Squint a little and you'll see it," the company said in blog post about the incident.

When Google learned that Ved didn't intend to keep the money but instead donate it to charity, the company doubled the reward. Ved, who is from India, directed that the money be given to the Art of Living India Foundation. The group runs free schools in parts of that country where poverty and child labor are widespread.

I think it would've been at some point, for sure a lot have tried and some may have been able to do so but I don't think that it was hacked in the extent wherein they suffered a big loss or damage.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai's Quora account has been hacked. Sundar Pichai isn't going to have a happy start to his week. The CEO of Google's Quora account appears to have been hacked by a group called OurMine, which previously broke into Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg's Twitter and Pinterest accounts earlier this month.

How can you say its wrong?
Obviously, they will not reveal it okay?
As for today there are lots of individuals, groups, companies trying to find a leak from Google by implementing negative or positive method to track Google's let's say ranking metrics.

    So many times it happened.
It happened for Google users and within Google applications also. It's a common technical problem but few years back it was horrible, at the time of orkut accounts used to hack just like that on regular basis. One of my friend's orkut account was hacket so many times. But these days it is improved a lot and they are tracking spy hackers just like that.

breaking into someone's orkut account isn't the same as actual hacking

I've heard that google in some countries got hacked, but never went into it too deep... This is actually interesting question, it never crossed my mind.
I agree with some of the guys saying that if it was hacked they wouldn't probably disclose it to the public, and they probably hired those who hacked them... that's what I would do.

On the other hand google is no unimaginable rich they spend crazy money on security... so I don't see any major hacking soon.

On the other hand Sony was badly hacked, so...
