Google Bans AdSense on ALL Sites Running Pop Up or Pop Under Ads

    https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/11/google-bans-its-ads-on-sites-that-use-those-annoying-pop-unders/

Google today clarified a change to its ad policies, which have now been updated to include a ban on Google advertisements on any websites that utilize “pop-under” advertisements. These obnoxious, irritating and often spammy advertisements are those that load “under” your current window – meaning you don’t see them until you minimize your browser.

“We do not believe these ads provide a good user experience, and therefore are not suitable for Google ads,” the company explains in an announcement regarding the new policy.

The change means that Google ads cannot run on the pop-unders themselves, and that the website triggering this type of advertisement won’t be able to run Google ads, either.

Are you implying that they may say no to any competing ads?

Why wouldn't they kill whatever gets in the way of generating revenue for them (yes, not you, but them)?

I didn't understand why they allow to put Adsense on your site if you have a pop up but they don't allow if you have a popunder.

They don't allow pop ups or pop unders now.

They are cracking down on intrusive ads that ruin user experience.

They are only targeting sites with popunder ads, not pop ups:

This is great news, ban them all and let them cry. I'm sick of those pop unders. Whoever genius invented it deserves to die in agony for ruining the internet.

This doesn't surprise me, however most sites which can use Google Adsense already don't have popup ads since they can earn much more with Adsense alone so this will not harm many websites.

Pop up or pop under ads are not good when it comes to UX. Just as above says, not many websites will be harmed by this change.

Well it's exactly the opposite, when you block ads you are ruining the internet, because publishers will not be able to monetize their sites are share their content for free. If users will have to pay websites for the content it will be the end of the internet.

False. We've gone to a much cleaner interface - no pops of any kind (under, over, in between, whatevers), no autoplay video, etc, etc and we've seen revenue skyrocket. The revenue is there if you truly balance UX and ads.

False, the cleaner you get the lower the revenue. Take for example big torrent sites that can't work with adsense. when PPI was strong they made Thousands of dollars every day. When Google stopped the PPI they started making Hundreds of dollars with pop ads. Now with banners they will make even less. And there are many many many websites that can't work with adsense and will have to struggle to stay alive.

How can you tell me my experience is false? We're generating better revenues with fewer ads. Period.

This isn't a fluke, it's been happening for close to six months at a rate of around 12-20M pageviews per month.

He is talking about AdSense itself, but you have to be careful while trying to implementing on your website. It's done by testing most suitable ads format, advertiser content should be related to your website content more. The fewer ads you run the more competition get started automatically at AdWords which lead increase of cost per click cost.

We're basically running a header bidding system and RevContent on our site. No pop ups, no pop unders, no interstitials, no takeovers, nothing.

    Total ads -

sidebar (desktop only) - 3 (1 video, autoplay without audio)
inline (all platforms) - 6 (up to 6 based on length of articles. You have to get to 16 paragraph article length to get 6)
under article - RevContent (just switched from AdBlade)

Most sites that are using pop ads are already not allowed on adsense for other reasons. So the percent of sites being affected by this change is going to be small I believe.

What VacationCrasher is saying it's true for most sites that have their own original content. One of the reasons for that is brands (who pay much higher rates) don't want to be associated with sites that have a bad user experience. So yes, when you clean your site up you'll start getting more ads from brands that pay a much higher rate.

Now if your site is mainly about sharing non original content, removing pops and other intrusive ads will decrease your revenue.
This happens because you won't get the ads from brands since they don't want to be associated with these types of sites.
