Google will not block its own ads. Youtube ads obscure content--if not stop the content and make you watch something first--and Google supposedly doesn't like that either. Unless it owns the site. Then it is okay.

I hate browsing Youtube and Google's advertisements are the reason why. I would rather have one pop-under instead of having to sit through 15 seconds of a 4 minute commercial before I have to click and close the ad. Seriously, on Youtube I have seen 4 minute commercials on 3 minute videos.

If anything, I say it might be time to block Google Chrome users. Just block them entirely. If you run a website and have to pay for hosting and thus have to pay to deliver data to those with ad blockers, you might as well just block them entirely because you will never make a cent off them.

The more I look, the dirtier this whole thing appears. The entire "ad block" thing is nothing more than a scheme to get rich blocking webmaster revenue streams or extorting money out of big advertisers. From Wikipedia:

    AdBlock browser extension:

AdBlock on its Google Play store says: "Unobtrusive ads aren't being blocked in order to support websites." You know, like those Google Adsense ads.

    AdBlock Plus browser extension:

So an "anonymous" buyer purchases one of the biggest ad blockers on the net, AdBlock (which is from a different developer than AdBlock Plus), and it starts participating in the "Acceptable Ads" thing which essentially determines for everyone what is acceptable and not. AdBlock Plus (different from AdBlock) also participates in the "Acceptable Ads" campaign which shakes down "large advertisers" for cash and determines for people which ads it finds "acceptable", which just happen to be like the type of ads Google makes the bulk of its revenue from: text link ads.

Sounds almost like a scam to funnel/force webmasters into Google's Adsense text link program. The bottom line is this: no ad blockers should be allowed. If you want to visit a website and enjoy its content, you do so at the webmaster's discretion and accept or reject the site in whole, including any advertisements. If a site has ads I find offensive or obtrusive, I close the browser tab and do not go back.

I'm done ranting for now. But I will check out the "BlockAdBlock" website and see if its javascript actually blocks browsers using ad blocking. It has "eval" in the javascript source and a bunch of stuff that is not human readable so I am suspicious.

If you want to block Chrome users, that is your choice. Google has no plans to block regular ads. They are blocking the very same ads I have refused to put on all my sites for nearly 17 years. I am all up for it. Google isn't going to start blocking all ads but their own. First off, they aren't the only tech company that is involved in this. If they started blocking all ads it would result in a class action lawsuit. If you bothered to look into this, they are also blocking their own ads that don't follow their rules. While I don't feel comfortable with an ad giant being involved in this, I am comfortable with a major browser taking the needed steps to help me filter out all the "scummy" advertising models out there. If Chrome is on board with this the other major browsers will be next. So instead of bitching about it, do something a bit more productive and find a business model that doesn't involve bad advertising models that just piss your consumers off to the point of either installing an ad blocker or simply not coming back to your site.

They are also blocking ads on pages that are more than 30% ads. Why on earth does a page need to be more than 30% ads in the first place?

Google has an incentive to get people to stop blocking ads. Who better to pioneer a movement to reduce ad blocker installs?

Popups may "work" to make you MONEY, but they are annoying as fuck to most end users and severely abused by many webmasters. Most people can't stand popups and the rest barely tolerate them. Perhaps this will stop users from just installing an ad blocker that blocks ALL ads instead of just the ones they are trying to rid themselves of to begin with.

I think this has more to do with Google and other companies trying to do something about the 22% of users that use ad blocking software with a 30% increase every year of ad blocking. If the webmasters and ad companies took some responsibility and stop using scummy ad practices, there would be no need for ad blocks.

Popunders and popup ads will decrease in the future. And it will be used only on websites that aren't accepted by Google: Porn, warez, file sharing, movie streaming - etc.
If Google will manage to block the popunders, a lot of companies will suffer. Not exactly because they have only popunders - but people still use them because it works.
If Google will block it, I think webmasters will be able to find something else. It's not like popunders are the only ad format that works. Yes, there are good money in those but there's also other ad format types which can have similar if not even better results.

I find those more annoying than the popunders. I can close a popunder, but I need to wait until the ad is finished to see a video on Youtube. Or I can refresh it and get another ad so I'd need it to refresh it again - and there's still a chance that I might get an ad on the second refresh too. I think the part Google didn't liked about popunders is that those are used to promote shitty services : tech support, viruses, malwares. This destroyed the popunder "reputation" and a lot of people suffered for this. Since popunder has this bad image, Google are trying to eliminate them - but they also use them in some cases, so it would be hard for them. Popunders will probably come to an end in 5-10 years - However in this time, I'm sure publishers will adapt.

What stolen content? If google will have it their way, no one will be able to monetize its content unless he's working with google.

If Google is providing a service that allows people to access content, shouldn't they be allowed to control how they monetize their own service? If you don't like the way Google monetizes something, then just work with a different search engine.

    No.

The Google search engine is not the issue, the Google Chrome browser is. Why do you think Google purchased Android back in 2005 and allows manufacturers of hand-held devices to install Android for free? It is because Google wants to control more and more of the internet. With mobile devices making up a majority of web traffic and Google Chrome installed on hundreds of millions of mobile devices as part of the Android OEM bundle, Google is now in a position to dictate which types of advertising it considers "acceptable" and no surprise that it considers its own advertisements acceptable and will not block those by default, if at all. That's the issue. Advertisements used by many webmasters will be blocked by default by Google Chrome but not Google Adsense or Adwords.

That seems like an overly extreme assessment. There is nothing that compares to Hitler. Not even Google.

If Google had 4% market share that was a reasonable request. But they have about 70% which make them a monopoly and as such, the anti-trust authorities must put several restraints so they will not abuse their power to block all competition.

Google does not have a monopoly on the internet. If you don't want to work with Google, if you don't want to use Google's search results, etc, then choose another search provider. There's Bing, Yahoo..... the list goes on. Google is not forcing you to use Google's services.

    Really.

Google competes with Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Bing, and many other large-reach sites. A monopoly would mean than those other sites have no room to compete. If you take a moment to assess your claims, you'll see that they just aren't true. Just because you don't like how successful Google is, doesn't mean that they have a monopoly on the internet.

Any buyer-seller rates and revshare ratios, away from bing and google, are international anranged since years.

Start selling subscriptions on your own in january and
be happy that google blows all that ad crimes out of the space.

I got a message from one publisher, that his site will be added to the google adblock list, even he show only 1 popup per page view.

And what i saw more troubling, that according to google rules, iframes or video players will count as part of the site and there the ads will be blocked too, so it will affect us too.

So it means death for us as video hosters and also a big damage to US economy, because if google blocks the ads, we can't pay for servers and thus causing dropping more and more bandwidth in general (talking about several Terabit/s) and the server companies makes loss with that.

I believe that Adult video websites should rather attempt to secure affiliate revenue by promoting unique content rather than using pop up ads or attempting to block anyone. This business will not die due to Google blocking anything, it's simply that the model is shifting and now requires you to get creative. I think that the vast amount of new tube sites that come online everyday but only scrap content from other websites, put pop ups on it and don't take care of the experience of their users are the accelerators of this shift.
