with todays research tools, that is actually the easy part. Lets say you are interested in DSLR cameras...
It will not take you long to find out that DSLR cameras are very competitive, so you may try something
like mirrorless cameras, however, even though it may be easy, it may take along time to even rank
for your keywords, they are still competitive, but not as bad as DSLR cameras as DSLR has been around
far longer then mirrorless cameras; camera accessories may also be something to look into also...

Keyword score:

20 easy to rank
30 somewhat easy to rank
40 more difficult to rank, still possible
50 will not rank in the near future...

If I was going to search for a new niche, then I would look for keywords that
fall between 20-30, and once the site gains some authority, then shoot for
keywords that fall between 30-40, otherwise, you will wasting time, money
and resources going after keywords that you are simply not ready for....

regardless, I would not choose cameras, over all, it is a competitive niche,
and it may take a long time compared to a niche with easier to rank keywords.

and like you said "research" will be one of your keys to success, other keys
maybe stuff like site design, trust factor, quality content, quality off/on page seo, etc....
having just one wrong key could kill the entire site....

Well findig low keywords its just a part of the ecuation ,after that you must work hard to create content etc .and i think you must create more that 1 video on youtube to get good traffic for example .A keyword research i use its called keyword planner tool
