Three years ago I started trying to make money online through creating a fully optimized website. After the website was built I easily got accepted into Google Adsense, (it was easier back then) and began collecting literal pennies for my thoughts.

The website brought in 67 people a week on average, this definitely would not cut it, as my hosting alone with $16.95 a month. Adsense does not pay much at all, now granted if you have massive traffic the AdSense can net you a couple hundred bucks a month.

Adsense was collecting my pennies, I was doing surveys and collecting products along with some okay cash, but I wanted more, I needed more. I began studying more on Udemy about charging for services, my service was and is SEO. But before the moderators flag this article, this is not about that.

I created an eLance profile to share my services, also allowing time to push my services on Craigslist 3 and 4 times a week to flood the thread. "BEST SEO SERVICE, Pick me because I'm better than the thousands of others." (Sarcastic.)

Honestly, I picked up One job in 6 months, maybe 2 jobs. The money just wasn't coming in, I was having to compete with the other SEO Specialist, who truthfully, had more skill and experience than I had at the time.

Amazon Affiliates brought money, sure. But how was I to gain more money to my PayPal, to my Square UP accounts?

2 Weeks ago, I made a decision to quit trying to make money online the conventional way (it wasn't working for me) and allow myself to stop TRYING to make money. Huh? Yes, I began providing my services totally free, pro bono as a friend put it.

I've made more money now in 2 weeks online than I have in the past three years of trying.

Each day I began to scour business social media sites that had no banners or cover art whatsoever, these people needed help. So, I simply PM'd them with a message that I would design and optimize a brand new social cover for them totally free. No Catch.

6 out of 6 of them gladly accepted. I got to work and designed high-quality graphic cover art, that had detailed information about contacting their business and maybe a quote on some. A few needed me to do revisions which were expected, we all have different tastes, that's what makes us unique.

A funny thing happened 2 days after I submitted the first cover banner, I opened my message box and had a message from the first business. "We are ecstatic about our new Twitter banner, we don't want to take advantage of you, we would like to pay you, at least help you any way we can."

This is what gratitude does, I offered back, "The work was no sweat, didn't take too long and I meant it, free. But if you feel obligated to give back, here's my PayLink xxxxx."

Thirty minutes later there was a PayPal payment of $40 bucks in my account. The others contacted me also and, well I'll leave that to your imagination.

Honestly, all it takes is time on my part, and that time mixed with gratitude netted me some much-needed cash online.

Now, I'm not telling you to go out there and offer every service you have for free and expect people to pay you every time in return, nor do I want you to NOT get paid for your hard work.

I know what happened, and in my experience, it works. I will continue to unselfishly help others online if and when I see that they may need it.

Oh, It's going @DynaDotRep - It's about not listening to neigh sayers who fail and give up, It's about pressing through and helping those who need help online.
Most people buy into every sale funnel they get trapped into, that's why they're spending more money than they get in return.

Right now, being focused on helping you, businesses and all around good people online is what I enjoy doing, despite the money. :) Thanks for taking the time, and I hope to see you winning online.

Let me know if there's anything you need help with?

If you are starting out, I believe that statement since you most don't make much your first few years, . If you've got a shitty attitude 3 years in I may believe that comment. For people like me, it's about Crushing it and helping others succeed, At the moment I only pay for hosting, and I've netted over $400, this is just online not counting my fishing sales.

I'll be working on scaling that for the month of July.

99% of people will fail making a profit online because of lack of discipline, consistency, knowledge, skill, whatever the case may be it's time to forget about the loss of money and begin helping others succeed where you can and they fail. "Come together, right now, over me!"

    Thanks, for stopping in @nekowai

Webmaster (not all) are focused in Adsense only and dreaming for 5k month with a content graber plugin or 2 articles per month. This is the only problem in my eyes, I was in this also. Once my account got blocked (without reason with $65 on it) I have started to open my eyes and am living from my online business now.

    Special thanks to adsense team.

Yea, Adsense went out the window awhile back for myself and the way I do business. (Though, I do run some on older sites).

When I write my value content to my readers, I'm looking to help them, not bombard them with Spam ads throughout the story. The content will have a greater ROI because it's massively helpful to my readers.
Besides, the click rate is down to like .004 or some crazy low number.

The Content will share the right resources to get my readers to their answer, thus pocketing some affiliate percentages. :)

Sucks, you weren't able to get the $65 back, yeah I just count those as learning EXP or a gift to Adsense. HA.

    Looking forward to Crushing IT!

Good example of focusing on customer needs. This doesnt always produce money in the short term, but thinking long-term it will always.

That's the idea @JohnApuna. Proactively focusing on needs builds a strong personal brand, overtime.

@Parkert It's an interesting story that you have written. I think that it could be useful for small businesses who want to build up a portfolio. They could offer some free work, but in return they get something to put in the portfolio. Which they could then use when they want to promote their business. For example a logo design business, can show potential customers logos that they have created for previous "customers". Compare this to a logo design business that can't show a portfolio because they haven't got any customers yet.

If you're a really talented designer why not team up with a coder and design themes for Wordpress? You can list them for sale on marketplaces such as ThemeForest.

This greatly depends on your income requirements.. If you are making pennies with adsense and a few dollars filling out surveys and quizzes I am not shocked that by offering free services you have found people willing to tip you or upsell services. However, I don't think that most people will be pleased with the results if their income requirements are over just a couple hundred a month.

You mentioned you did 6 projects for free and a few of those required revisions (LOL). Then someone felt bad for benefiting from your free service then tipped you 40 bucks. Your case study was you worked for free for 6 different people and received a donation of 40 bucks. If that is all you were looking for to begin with by all means keep on doing what you're doing. But you most likely won't be satisfied with the "business model" if you need to make real money.

I feel you man! It's really cool that you already have references and I bet they will suggest you to others. Kudos!

Kind of my story :p Except for this v v v
:D Of course you don't have to sell your work at no cost, but think if it is going to be rewarded to you somehow in the long run!

Keep up with changes in technology, everything. Be helpful.
Create your own product, build a website, and bring in promoters.
I design custom bass spinner baits and jigs, I sell them on my own secure website and I have others promote.

    Be genuine and helpful.

True. The key is stop chasing money, and start chasing needs. Identify a problem in a marketplace, find a way to solve it, and sell the solution.

This may well be THE best answer. Be genuine, and offer services that help others. Business is about solving problems that people have -- whether that be the need of a specific service or product. Find a need that you can fill.... and fill it. Build relationships along the way, and you'll find yourself building a customer base. Your customer base is what will make you successful.
