Are "sidewide" links worth it?

I see alot of people offering "sitewide" links for sale and asking for sitewide links in exchange for links on their site.

However, my question is... is a sitewide link significantly better than a link from just one page per site (for example the homepage)? Surely having one link from a quality, relevant site is worthwhile, after that the value of multiple links reduced significantly?

    I agree.
Just do what makes sense. Sitewides don't make sense.

I usually get a few, but that is after many natural backlinks have been placed.

...All myspace sites pretty much only do sitewide link exchanges. Do you think they are all wrong? I do only sitewide links and I am ranking well.

If the whole industry does the same thing - there is nothing to distinguish them. My guess would be though: the ones no top for competing keywords have more non-sitewide links (more direct links) than the others. In other words: where you rank well isn't because of the sitewides. It's because everybody else is also doing that, so penalizing you would not make any difference to the rankings. I'd predict that getting a few direct trusted links would increase your rankings very quickly.

I'm new to this idea, is there proof that non-sitewide links are better?
It seems everyone thinks they are better, why?

    Thanks.

I hate sitewide links because they aren't "natural" votes which is what Google is looking for.

google doesnt give negative value for sitewides so i dont see why not
im happy with all my sitewide links and what they have done.

honestly google can go puppy itself (just keep sending me adsense cheques)
ill get more traffic from sitewides than google will give for me having this "natural homepage link"

who adds links they like to their homepage?

This is exactly the logic I follow when I see people advertising or asking for sitewide links.

I do buy sitewide links occasionally..... if the site linking you has quality content and traffic, you will certainly get good traffic from them :)

sitewide links are always good for recieving extra traffic.
if you ignore the pr factor for 5 second and think about actual traffic, sitewide links are actually useful.

If you get a sitewide link from a page with homepage PR 6 , and many PR 4 inner pages, does this count as much as one PR 6 link, and 3 PR 4 links on different sites?
    I mean for your PR

Not an SEO expert but I am pretty sure they would only count 1 link.

"Sitewide links" means you put link to your site on each page of another site.
