For a long time, the limit was approximately 160 characters (give or take). If you went much over that then Google would truncate your description or even just replace it with something else. Recently, Google extended that length to 200+ characters (depending on the search term). Google is, of course, being vague about this and when it is the case. I would still try to stick between 150-160 characters for now. At least 150 because you want to take advantage of all the space you can, and less than 160 so that you can complete your thought!
