I agree! There is definitely an opportunity here! But I doubt if DP does this, they will agree with the $10/year forever rate. You know....this is business. Maybe $20-25 a year forever? That's better than yearly increments and hidden (and inconsiderate) fees! Whatcha say?
Then move... simple really, godaddy is about branding... guess what, branding costs more money... find a less known register, and then you will find prices closer to what you maybe looking for... I would never use godaddy for anything, they are a company that has employees, and employees cost money, so overall, you most likely pay higher for services that you can get cheaper elsewhere... and nothing is $10 forever, that is not realistic... when costs/demand/fees/greed goes up, then they are quickly passed onto buyers.... do some research... then go elsewhere... or stay and bitch about how you dislike GoDaddy... GoDaddy, YourDaddy, GoDaddy, MyDaddy, YourDaddyyyy.... Should DP be a domain register? No, however, that is my opinion, becoming a domain register has a whole new set of rules... If dp was a domain register, would his fees fit your goals? DP would no doubt follow market conditions on domain register fees... http://www.wikihow.com/Become-a-Domain-Registrar
lol - that was funny. Well, thank you for writing that out. I get from your experience that $10 is not simply unprofitable, but pretty much a loss leader. There is a lot about the 'back end' of being a registrar that no doubt has a fixed cost associated with it. I don't think the wholesaler issue would apply - but i do no it is no small feat to become a registrar. I actually have slowly been migrating my domain names to name cheap... because they have better policies overall. As far as DP goes - I am not sure exactly what the main focus is or even their main target is (for advertising). I DO think they should pick a more interesting home page setup - to replace Rusty Brick going over the minutia of everything Google MAY be doing. Who said I stayed? You forgot the middle option. MOVE and research creating another option. And you are wrong about the smaller ones - they can't charge less. Economy of scale just isn't there.
