Is Google getting to big?

    The Google Report Part 1
    By: Joel Wilkinson

Google began as a research project in January, 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Ph.D. students at Stanford University, California. They hypothesized that a search engine that analyzed the relationships between web sites would produce better results than existing techniques (existing search engines at the time essentially ranked results according to how many times the search term appeared on a page).

In 2000, Google began selling advertisements associated with search keywords. This strategy was important for increasing advertising revenue, which is based upon the number of hits users make upon ads. The ads were text-based in order to maintain an uncluttered page design and to maximize page loading speed. Keywords were sold based on a combination of price bid and clickthroughs, with bidding starting at $.05 per click. This model of selling keyword advertising was pioneered by Goto.com (later renamed Overture, then Yahoo! Search Marketing). While many of its dot-com rivals failed in the new Internet marketplace, Google quietly rose in stature while generating revenue.

U.S. Patent 6,285,999 describing part of Google's ranking mechanism (PageRank) was granted on September 4, 2001. The patent was officially assigned to Stanford University and lists Lawrence Page as the inventor. (Google History http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google)

Google is so big. The verb "Google" was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, meaning "to use the Google search http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/Google

With Google's increased size comes more competition from large mainstream technology companies. One such example is the rivalry between Microsoft and Google. Microsoft has been touting its MSN Search engine, and more recently its Windows Live search in February 2006, to counter Google's competitive position. Furthermore, the two companies are increasingly offering overlapping services, such as webmail (Gmail vs. Hotmail), search (both online and local desktop searching), and other applications (for example, Microsoft's Windows Live Local competes with Google Maps).

Google gets ad edge on Yahoo REPORT IN October 2006

Google announced on Thursday that it had almost doubled its net profits in the third quarter to $733-million and increased its revenue by 70 percent to $2.6-billion, of which 99 percent was online advertising. [...]

Yahoo! , However, announced a 38 percent fall in profits in the same quarter, at $158.5-million, and a rise of only 19 percent in revenue to $1.58-billion.

Peter Norvig gave a talk at UC Berkeley on September 25. Among other things, he talked about some Google projects that use artificial intelligence. He also said that a large corpus of data can be much more valuable than an efficient algorithm. One example of projects where Google uses a lot of data is Google Q&A, that is extracting facts from web pages and delivering as answers to common questions like "what is the population of Japan?". Google doesn't use predefined patterns, they find the patterns from examples, as this approach is more scalable. They extract data by matching the patterns against the top results for a query.

According to the Nielsen cabinet, Google is the most used search engine on the web with a 54% market share, ahead of Yahoo! (23%) and MSN (13%). However, independent estimates from popular sites indicate that more than 80% of search referrals come from Google, with Yahoo!
A distant second and MSN occupying barely 5%. The Google search engine receives about a billion search requests per day. AOL and Netscape are now using Google in or about late October 2006. AOL search engines receives about a 1/2 billion search and Netscape about 1/4 billion search request per day by using Google results, so what this mean that you looking at about more than 1 1/2 billion search requests per day, your website's must be lists on Google, if you what to see the light of day.

MSN and its other online businesses used to be a really big deal. They stater the top of the pack with AOL and Yahoo! Inc. That was before social networking and video sharing and ... Google Inc.

Internet search leader Google is snapping up YouTube for $1.65 billion, brushing aside copyright concerns to seize a starring role in the online video revolution.

Dogpile.com, the search engine that combines the top results from all the leading search engines, ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction among Internet users, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Residential Online Service Customer Satisfaction Study.

Some of the most important search engines, probably accountings for more than 90% of the search engine market today.

Google Now in Domains Up for Sale not its domain names, of course, but ones that people may want to register while signing up for Google. (12/14/2006)

If you already have a domain, it's all free* and everything is hosted by Google. No hardware or software required. If you don't have a domain yet we'll help you register a new one for $10 a year. See this page at: http://www.google.com/a/

Google engineer Costin Manolache also noted the offer includes private registration. This keeps personal information out of view of whois look ups. HELLO! SPAMMER, if you been seeing a 100 spam’s a day look out! You will now see 300 or more a day, thank Google for this one, this make harder to shut down spammer.

Google Apps for Your Domain offers five services that can be private-labeled by the organization. It's a quick and currently free way to offer members of an organization email, IM, and calendar services branded with the organization's name and logo. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/12/your-easiest-holiday-task.html

A Google feature change article wouldn't be complete without a comparison to Microsoft. The competition between the two has been a wonder to watch, as Google poses a challenge to Microsoft that few technology companies ever have.

Microsoft offers a free domain registration as part of its Office Live service. There are three tiers of service, and they focus on establishing a website and email for the domain; higher tiers provide the Office Live Business Contact Manager service.

But Microsoft tucks in something else with all three tiers. They provide a free copy of the Office Live adManager beta tool, which is used for managing adCenter campaigns.

Google has kept its focus on effective communications over a variety of options. They have noted ever since the launch of the Apps service that a premium version will become available in the future.

We’re taking a look at very informative about Google's latest PR's next year coming up 2007, PageRank update. Your website is like the stock market, you will see PR's go up and down this coming year and some websites alway down.

No, Google is not too big, it's good.

"Truthiness" is one of the most popular words in 2006 according to Merriam-Webster (?) but that doesn't make Stephen Colbert too popular. He's just good, and being rewarded with popularity.

If Google sucks - for a while - repeatedly - and doesn't respong to customer requests.... then someone will step in their place and offer what they can't. Until then, Google is king.

Google is not to big. They have services that complement other sections of their company (gmail and adwords / adsense). I hope they continue to grow and buy startups and improve upon them.

I think Google has an intriguing management method. Through the company message boards if you can get enough people interested in your project you are allowed to proceed on it part-time.

So it has big company money, with a startup mentality. As long as they keep that, they will continue to get better.

Hey, I graduated in Computer Science from the same school as Larry Page. Good ole U of Md.

But we never had the honor of meeting.

I think Google is quite big.

I heard a few years back Microsoft wanted to buy it, but they said 'Not for Sale' buddy.

But the truth is that Google has become Microsoft’s number one enemy. And not necessarily because Microsoft wants a piece of the online ad action or because Google has been hiring several Microsoft ex-engineers. http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=12603

I think google needs to worry more about search results and improving Adwords/Adsense and less about all the other crap they are putting out. If people wanted a portal they would be using Yahoo or MSN but we want good results and that is why people used google. If they want to stay on top of the search engine game they need to focus on providing the best results.
