What cannot be hosted on Linux hosting server?
(I guess this: ASP.net, MS SQL..??, but can someone tell for all programs)

What cannot be hosted on Windows hosting server?
(Ruby on Rails ? anything more?)

    Anyone knows exactly?

As a rule, anything windows can do Linux does better, however there are a few excpetions to the rule ( as with every rule ), you're correct in thinking that MsSQL cannot run on a *nix enironment, there are ways to execute asp, asp.net and rails code, the first two is done with caution, the modules that allow it are in heavy development and are subject to bugs and hackery.

As with every exception, there's a way to avoid it, if you had a real powerful machine, you could split into vps and install windows / mssql on a vps and have linux take up the other half.

When it's all said and done, 60% of the internet use Linux only networks for telecomunication purposes, sure everyone might have windows sitting infront of them running helpdesk software or whatever, but you can bet your bottom dollar the machines doing the hard work are linux based machine, Windows is for donkey work, so in my opinion, no matter what the draw backs might be they are nothin in comprison to the advantages of running an opensource operating system.

When chosing operating system, you don't always know in advance what programs you'll run there, so this was a general question about limits of Linux and Windows servers.

To krakjoe: So in general - only what is strictly from Windows can run only on Windows, like MS SQL.

Yeah sure, but, ms-sql isnt any better than mysql just a load more expensive.....and that's actually the only thing I can think of that linux cannot run somehow......

OK, I do not force anything at this point, only wants to know once for ever what Linux Or Windows can't do. To prevent dissapointment after getting hosting.

So, will something not go with Windows?
