What is Ruby? I tried googling and came up with ruby on rails???

I have tried out zencart and magento. There was always a great deal of learning involved until the sites were up and running and every once in while a major update meant a major headache.

I have been wanting to try a something along the lines of shopify but haven't gotten a chance to learn the ins and outs!

Go for Saas, do not need to know coding, usually it is more relaiable to rent solution since provider's success is related to your own success. This way you can be focus on your main scope of business instead of coding + in a bad day you are not the only one who care about your business.

there is several solution provider on market, mostly good for start-ups- easy to operate, eBay integrated, some payments gateways etc. Usually they offer free templates and even with limited knowledge you can run business pretty smooth. Problem starts when business grow and 2-3 ppl team have to handle all and 100+ orders a day. The number of expensive mistakes rise and to keep reputation you have to sacrifice margin... Than you need professional solution with: WMS, POS, data collectors, bookmarks integration, payments, couriers, affiliate program, social media, Amazon, eBay, automated order handling, returns, couriers, customer automated notification, discounts, loyalty programs etc. RWD + app + recommendation system is a must when you want to win the challenge. It is also good if you have multistore- b2c, b2b on separated domains. Why to develop stand alone and bear cost of meintenace cost in case you can get it in a range of 40 quit a month including technical support. When you take into consideration additional features like rapid offer sharing for b2b and product catalog suppliers synch... with 7,5 an hour for copy paste...
I would not even consider own development on backend side. For front-end I would spent...

Programming language is not the most important point for e commerce web sites. There are millions of other parameters for e commerce such as marketing, design, logistics, stock, server, seo, customer relationships etc etc ... In my opinion an e commerce site with a powerfull seo is the most important thing.

    I always do:
First, i build my main e commerce site. (i prefer viart shop)
Second, i build more e commerce sites (my bridge web sites) for some of my categories which they exist in my main e commerce site. I use wordpress + yoast seo + avazilla virtual assistant for these web sites.
Third, i use ads ofcourse but not for all products. If i catch my visitors via my bridge web sites, i exclude these products from ads. This way is more economic than paying ads for every products.
