Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. Please excuse me if I didn't choose the appropriate section for my question. I would like to hide (without deleting) my photography related website for some time until I'm completely ready to run it. I created my website with Wix. Is there any way I can do this? Thank you very much for your help.
I'm not that familiar with Wix but this is on their website Can I temporarily hide or unpublish my site? https://www.wix.com/support/html5/ugc/2c4ebf05-65a7-4c4b-bdd0-b404da31c0cb/deb42c59-7411-4bf0-a3b0-da568d9e6ff4 edit: I have a feeling I can't post links yet. You should be able to paste that in If you really want to it be not accessible I would be tempted to change over the nameserver info so the domain doesn't then point to the right place. At least no one will be able to access. Don't forget though if Google has indexed some pages they will likely disappear and re-inclusion might not happen as quickly as you want (or could be problematic)
Thank you for your fast reply! I've done that, but apparently when I search my name in google, my website still appears. I don't have much knowledge on this subject, how could I change the nameserver info? And what does it mean when Google indexes a page? Thanks again.
Sorry for my late reply The site might well be not accessible but Google will take a while to drop it. This is indexing i.e. the storage of a page or pages in their records. Name server info is when you registered your domain name and pointed it to Wix. You would have gone into your domain settings and then selected name servers. They would have been something like ns1.wix.com and ns2.wix.com (just guessing what they are). You probably would have followed some instructions from them to do this. If you change them (temporarily) to n1s.somemadeupnonsense.com then your domain won't work because the domain name then won't have a home. In fact, thinking about it your domain registrar might well just have a parking page you can set the domain to. However, you "disconnect" the domain name this comes with the fact that Google will drop you (see above) and when you are ready to go again won't necessarily tie in with Google's schedule of relisting you. I hope that rambling makes some sense to you. Jason
Basically to hide a website, all you need to do is to change its location or the pointers to its location, which can be done several different ways. However, be aware of the following, as noted by others. 1) Any page that Google or anyone else has cached when they indexed the site WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE until the next time Google returns to index the site. It may take MONTHS for the indexing to disappear from the indexes. 2) Pages that are cached OUTSIDE of an index may NEVER disappear. Wayback comes to mind here. 3) When you unhide the website, it may take MONTHS before the search engines reindex your site.
