Here are some factors to start with -
    1. Improve your quality score ( For this, you need to improve your CTR, Landing pages and relevancy of your ad copy. ).
    2. Narrow down your target locality. Analyze from where you get most of your leads and target only those areas. Maybe narrow down to region or city.
    3. Schedule your ads to run on most optimum time when your target visitors search for your product or services. For example, if you have a B2B business, possibilities are you wont get any leads/clicks at weekends and after midnight.
    4. Go for more long tail . low competitive keywords. Make sure you maintain an effective list of negative keywords to ignore unwanted clicks.

You need to figure out what your prospects need, want and are looking for. When you do, your click rate will be higher and so will your QS. A higher QS generally leads to lower CPC.

If you sell purple cow costumes, what is it that those wanting a purple cow costume want? Sell the sizzle, not the steak. Of the two ads below, which do you think will get a higher CTR?

Purple Cow Costumes - We have them. Just $99.

Purple Cow Costumes - Be the life of the party.

My bet would be on the second one. But you need to test that just to be sure. And test with other hooks. If you do this right, you'll know what your prospects want more than anything.

Of course, you need to start with the right keywords. In this case, "purple cow costume(s)". Not "purple cow". Maybe "cow costume(s)" but your money keyword will be the one that is what the product is. And don't forget to bring those clicks to the proper page. You are not going to convert as well if people land on the green cow costume if they searched for the purple one, and certainly not your home page where you may have all kinds of costumes. Make it easy for your potential customers and give them what they were looking for right away.

    Create highly targeted ads
    Improve your landing page experience
Offer exactly what you promise in your ad in the landing page
Use dynamic title for the ads
Offer something more than your competitors

I am in a highly competitive software industry and therefore cost per clicks are pretty expensive in Adwords, especially the long tail ones. How much does CPC go down when increasing the keyword relevance from say 5 to 7 or 8?

The basic CPC is calculated as the ad rank (the bid and QS) of the next ad below you divided by your QS. While you could deduce that going from 5 to 7 would reduce your CPC by 40%, it doesn't work exactly like that in practice.

Simply by the fact that your QS increases means your position does too which means you have a different competitor. This assumes that nothing changes, not their QS, not their bids. You never have the same competitor, not at all times even if things were fairly static.

At a QS of 5, your competitor may have one of 8 but bid in a way to place him below you. So you may bid $0.20 giving you an ad rank of 100 and he may bid $0.10 for 80. That would make your CPC about $0.16.

One problem is that QS is actually many decimal places which you don't see. If it was actually 4.6, your CPC would be $0.17 but if QS was 5.4 your CPC would be $0.15. So how close your QS actually is to the point where you flip over to the next whole number will affect your cost. Here only by a penny but that penny represents a fair percentage.

Let's go back to using whole numbers for QS as we see them. Unless there was not many competitors and your competitor at a QS of 5 is the same as it would be at 7, then your CPC would drop to 11 or 12 cents.

But it is unlikely you'd have the same competitor. What you pay in your new position with a new competitor depends on that competitor's numbers. Say it was a QS of 7 and bid of $0.20 (same as you), your CPC would actually go up to close to $0.20. Your QS in this case improved but your CPC went up.

CPC is not the most important metric. Revenues and profits are. You do want higher QS because a good QS somewhat insulates you from equal competitors. It also means you are maximizing clicks which means all else being equal, you make more sales and thus more profits.

The best way to do this is to cut down on geo or any locations and keywords you select. More locations and more keywords will cost more. If they high paying keywords, for example, "games" then it will cost more. And if you select more locations and countries for this keyword, then it's going to cost you more. There will be a limit to how much you can lower your bids for these reasons I mentioned. If you do some of the options I mentioned, then go back and try to lower your bids, then you should be abe too.

I hope this has helped. NOTE: There are other ways too, but this is the best and most common way to do so.
