Are Long Tail Keywords Becoming Less Effective?

Discussion in 'Keywords' started by dscurlock, Jan 30, 2016.

Everyone is into this long tail keyword thing, but the issue is people
simply use the same keywords over and over....

I was visiting a seo site the other day, and I think he knows what
he is talking about for the most part, if not, then just more BS SEO Talk...

anyways, he was saying that exact match long tail is becoming
less effective, and I will provide an example below.

One person uses "SEO Chicago" in their anchor text...

Another person uses "Best SEO Firm In Chicago"

His claims is that the 2nd person will end up with better rankings
then the person shooting for exact match keywords for "SEO Chicago"

How the hell are you supposed to rank for "SEO Chicago" if google
expects your anchor to be unique. I guess google figures that you
are using "SEO Chicago" in your own spin, and give you rank based on that?

Rather then using exact match long tail keywords, maybe it is just
best to use those keywords in your own anchor sentences?

    I dunno....

I don't quite understand where you say long tails are less effective when the case you've presented saying the second person will get better results... he's using a longtail approach.

I can attest using my own data. After coming back into the SEO scene after a many year break I was a little lost on SEO. After reading for months I started executing my strategy. Specifically, any site's that linked to me I requested that the anchor be something long tail, generally part of a sentence.

For example, instead of "Search Term" I requested the anchor to be "check out a great "Search Term" alternative here". By doing this I've ranked not only for my "Search Term" but also other combinations such as "Search Term Alternative" and "Great Search Term".

I can't tell you why, because I don't know. My best guess would be due to google's algorithm.

Long tail pro provides the accurate result. There could be some change and seo strategy problem between the users that you have mentioned.

Right now I try to focus on long keywords rather than short keywords. They are much more accurate and effective. You can try Long Tail pro.

Not at all. Long tail keywords are more specific and get to the point more easily. That makes it easy to relate to other options available around the keyword. They are the best and works best for many SEO blogs.

I think you've misunderstood what longtail keywords are - they are more niche keywords that have a lower search volume, meaning that less users are searching for them and as a result there's less competition within the industry for these terms. In return it's easier to rank for and if you acquire a number of these, you can bring in considerable traffic. These keywords are usually 4+ words long as they're questions or terms that are not generic or broad. For help, here's a tool to help you find longtail keywords.

The term SEO Chicago is very broad and not at all a longtail keyword, something like "How to find a good SEO firm in Chicago" is much better.

One should also bear in mind that with "commodity" type of keywords (for example, "pure wool yoga mats"), it is much easier to rank if you are an e-commerce (that is, all the top positions on Google will be taken by Amazon, etc). With a niche website, one should try to rank with "information" or "review" keywords (e. g., "best cat food for sterilized cats" or "kitten food reviews").

    I agree.
@dscurlock the thing about searching nowadays is more about a query/phrase type.
"SEO Chicago" and "Best SEO Firm In Chicago" are still a bit generic for me.

In order to know exactly what people are searching, then you need a keyword tool like jaaxy,
and still it can take a good amount of time, as you are only guessing which keywords people
are searching for; I always come up with dead end or low value searches, so you have to dig, dig and dig....
with anything less then you are just shooting in the dark, and you do not want to waste content, time, and
money using worthless keywords, and worse, using unrankable keywords....

I think so it his wrong data analysis otherwise long tail keyword is good for rank easily and rapidly. But exact match keywords need much more time from long tail keyword. It's my personal experience.

If you need ranking then you should use long keywords; this is the approach of getting results on short keywords.

Long tail keywords are those 3 and 4 keyword phrases which are very, very particular about anything you are selling. You see, when a consumer uses a highly specific search terms, they tend to be looking for specifically what they are going to purchase.

Long tail keywords are still in demand. When people do a google search they type more words in search box.
Long tail keywords generate more than 70% search traffics. They bring targetted traffic to your site and not to say it has a good conversion rate. So using long tail keywords is more profitable than short head keywords.

Wrong assumption. New search queries account for a large chunk of keyword searches on Google. Furthermore, long tail searches make up the bulk of your traffic, of course they are important.

NO, for me long tail words play an ample amount of help to rank. Its a long discussion but in short you can consider longtail (go from longtail to short tail according to your niche) if competition is high.
